Publisher's summary

That’s not cool! #1 New York Times bestselling author Jess Walter finds his beloved Millie sleeping with his neighbor. On his porch!

In this funny remembrance of an unusual triangle, Jess learns to accept what’s best for the one animal he has ever loved. After all, he gave his heart to the Australian shepherd mix he’d rescued. What alternative has he other than to give the restless girl her freedom? But in doing so, Jess discovers more about himself, the nature of affection and attachment, the inevitability of loss, and how much Millie means to so many.

Jess Walter’s Parable is part of The One, a collection of seven singularly true love stories of friendship, companionship, marriage, and moving on. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single sitting, with or without company.

Canine love story

No spoilers. But Jess Walter manages to make you fall in love with his dog Millie, more through her faults than her virtues. CN: there are several graphic mentions of Walter's rancher family putting animals down.

Excellent!

Thoroughly enjoyed every minute, thought I would be able to get the dishes done while I listened but stood there looking at the speaker for the better part of an hour just smiling.

Parable

Short, sweet little story about a man, a dog, and their unconventional "open" relationship. Loved this story and highly recommend.

A dog lover's book 🐕😊

I really enjoyed the story. It reminded me of the rescue dogs that I loved over the years.

What A Dog

This is for both the ebook and the Audible.

Loved most of this book. The parts dealing with how animals, including dogs, were treated by his extended family was horrible. I chose to skip that section. Luckily it was only a few pages.

The rest of the book was beautifully written about a very original dog that chose her own people. Millie sounded wonderful. I am so glad the author included her photo at the beginning of the book. The way she chose to live her life was amazing and the fact that her "family" allowed her to be herself shows real love and trust.

I admit, I cringed at her being off leash and/or walking herself. I have always lived in cities where that would be extremely dangerous. But it worked for Millie.

I originally borrowed this book but I enjoyed it so much I bought it. I look forward to reading the Millie sections again. And I highlighted a lot of it.

Creepy at first, but worth the listen

I've enjoyed 3 books from Jess Walter and was glad to see this short story by him and narrated by him. It began a little dark and he even mentions how talking about his family raising farm animals on their ranch while he was young is difficult for people to hear. But, the story develops and I found myself taking a long walk home so I could be sure to finish it.
