In the posh London street of Paragon Walk, a young woman is brutally raped and murdered. Once again the incomparable team of sleuths, Inspector Thomas Pitt and his young wife, Charlotte, peer beneath the elegant masks of the well-born suspects and reveal that something ugly lurks behind the handsome facades of Paragon Walk, something that could lead to more scandal, and more murder.Don't miss the other Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries.©1981 Anne Perry (P)2001 Recorded Books Suspense Thriller & Suspense Fiction

But ultimately disappointing to me. Charlotte’s complete and total self righteousness is becoming rather tiresome. Her character, at times, delights in the misery of others. Yet she is held up to be the most kind and beautiful chestnut haired Saint Charlotte. I feel Ms. Perry has put her character on a pedestal, but at the same time, this same character is petty and vindictive towards other women! Just because they’re rich and not perfect, she is constantly mocking them and laughing under her breath! Certainly no one can hold a candle to the absolute perfection of Ms. Charlotte. I will not be surprised when at some point she’s transported directly to heaven, and surely be the most beautiful woman there! Then all of the very best looking men, who never failed to notice, Ms. Saint Charlotte, and are willing to bend over backwards for her in every way, because of her absolute beauty and perfection, will surely tear their hearts out because she’s gone. I won’t miss her.

Good narrator, Interesting enough

I have listened to 3 books in this series and have enjoyed them. The stories are interesting but the endings are very abrupt and leave you wondering why. The next book doesn’t give you answers.

How can one help but love Anne Perry's writing? She carries you off to a completely different time and place. There are always twists and turns with Inspector Pitt, Charlotte and Emily unwinding them as they go. I've read them before, but it's lovely to listen to Davina Porter reading them for us.

I just love these!

Excellent story of the "haves and the have nots" and their thought processes. The different standards for men and women is apparent, and par for the course for the time period. The interactions between Thomas and his wife, Charlotte are some of the best parts of the story. The way of life for Charlotte's sister, Emily is such a contrast to Charlotte's life with Thomas. AND it gives the listener a full view of which is the better choice. The love and respect between the sisters is growing as Emily begins to see life on both sides of the tracks. A great addition to the series.
