About this listen

After you've sold your soul to the devil, can you renegotiate with a dog?

Brilliant defense attorney Finn Morgenstern knows the worst guys pay best, so defending slimeball Rance Franklin becomes his path to senior partner and a whole lot of benefits. But then a walk home to his pricey townhouse brings him face-to-ears with a batshit-crazy little dog who just won't leave him alone. So Finn takes the dog to the local veterinarian to find out how to get her back to her owners.

Hello vet! Emerson "Em" Fairweather sure doesn't match his stodgy name. Tall, platinum blond, and gorgeous, Em puts the pet in pet ownership. But Em has ugly secrets, and Batshit the dog is up to her ears in larceny. Suddenly, Finn is the one who needs defending, and he's faced with a choice between what he thought was important and a whole new batshit-crazy life.

Contains mature themes.

Engaging, Hilarious, and Full of Fun

I absolutely loved this story! Three big cheers for Batshit—the true charmer of the whole book! Every character, even the villains, was fascinating and added so much to the plot. The narrator nailed all the voices (except the mom, which was just hilarious in a weird way). Overall, this was a fun and engaging read, and Batshit definitely stole the show!

Fairly good story!

I was a little hesitant about the book, because it’s not my usual cozy mystery series. However, I have my own papillon dog, so of course I couldn’t resist. Batshit is brilliant! I was a little put off by the gay intimacy and dog demeaning stuff, but that is just my personal preference and I don’t hold it against the book. I got over it, so you can too! I really hope they release the second book in audio form too!

A delightful camp filled romp!

What could have been a disaster of a book instead oozes charm and vintage Disney like drama. If you are a fan of old hi-jinks capers, you will love this book. The dog is the star, as precocious as a child actor, but amusing and always to the rescue. The guys are good too.

I’ve enjoyed Kale Williams more in other books, but he still delivers a solid performance here. The over Frenchified pronunciation of papillon is grating, but after the first few chapters it isn’t an issue.

Speaking of not being an issue, I had some concern early on when Em, the vet didn’t scan for a microchip in our little escape artist pup. He mentions the value of the breed and that she could he chipped but then doesn’t check. Instead depending on old school phone calls. Once the we get past that initial visit, the story begins to gel. This isn’t Diana Gabaldon with hundreds of pages of detailed exposition. Tara Lain keeps it to the point and moving fast. Once you get a feel for her style, it’s all good.

The only thing that didn’t work for me is Finn’s long hair. That wouldn’t go over in a criminal defense practice and certainly not a government lawyer. A minor detail to be sure. Also for all the writers who think writing lines describing a room or office in the most bland terms and for no real reason - take a lesson for Tara. Her use of descriptions buttress the story. When Finn is taking stock of his life, he acknowledges specific things that he’s spent big to acquire. Expensive flatware or a top of the line stove are choices he made, but do they really matter? Telling the reader the walls are sage and the couch is brown is simply filler.

Highly recommended.

The puppy is the star of the book.

I loved this story because the plot was well thought out and I was often surprised by what came next. However, some people will have a hard time with this book because the puppy is the star of the show. There wasn't much time building a relationship between the two main characters. It was just a coincidence they were together. Along with the pup, the plot carried the book. I loved the story. But if your looking for strong main characters with a lot of sex, this is not the book for you. The only thing I didn't like were the many contradictions in the story. They didn't ruin the story, but they were annoying. Who read the book before it was published? Seriously. As far as the narrator, he was fabulous! I always knew who was talking and he could even make lots of animal sounds for the vet's waiting room. I was impressed.

love Kale Williams

he's supposed to be a genius lawyer 🙄
and yet, he's acting like a complete dumbass when it comes to the furbaby! 😒
I'm in chapter 8, but if he keeps on repeating the same dumb shit, I'm not gonna keep on listening.
He's personality is on my last nerve.
Who calls a pup 🐶 bat shit crazy? if he didn't want to be bothered by her then he should have ignored her or taken her to the 5 0.
I get annoyed easily 😒 with repeaters it stems from the guy my mom married when I was young, he constantly repeated himself 🙄 I'm working on getting over that, It's definitely work in progress.
