Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “[This] absorbing, affectionate portrait manages to bring [Newman] back to us. . . . Paul Newman leaves readers with a surprisingly cheering message. If the rest of us can’t aspire to having Newman’s life, we can at least take inspiration from the way he lived his.”—The Washington Post

“A graceful tribute to a one-of-a-kind man.”—The Seattle Times
“Newman’s life was never dull, and Levy re-creates it in vivid detail.”—Parade

Paul Newman, the Oscar-winning actor with the legendary blue eyes, achieved superstar status by playing charismatic renegades, broken heroes, and winsome antiheroes in such revered films as The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict, The Color of Money, and Nobody’s Fool. But Newman was also an oddity in Hollywood: the rare box-office titan who cared about the craft of acting, the sexy leading man known for the staying power of his marriage, and the humble celebrity who made philanthropy his calling card long before it was cool.

Unlike his father, a successful entrepreneur, Newman bypassed the family sporting goods business to pursue an acting career. After struggling as a theater and television actor, Newman landed the lead role of boxer Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me when, in a tragic twist of fate, James Dean was killed in a car accident. Part of the original Actors Studio generation, Newman demanded a high level of rigor and clarity from every project. The artistic battles that nearly derailed his early movie career would pay off handsomely at the box office and earn him critical acclaim.

He applied that tenacity to every endeavor both on and off the set. The outspoken Newman used his celebrity to call attention to political causes dear to his heart, including civil rights and nuclear proliferation. Taking up auto racing in midlife, Newman became the oldest driver to ever win a major professional auto race. A food enthusiast who would dress his own salads in restaurants, he launched the Newman’s Own brand dedicated to fresh ingredients, a nonprofit juggernaut that has generated more than $250 million for charity.

In Paul Newman: A Life, Shawn Levy gives listeners the ultimate behind-the-scenes examination of the actor’s life, from his merry pranks on the set to his lasting romance with Joanne Woodward to the devastating impact of his son’s death from a drug overdose. This expansive biography is a portrait of an extraordinarily gifted man who gave back as much as he got out of life—and just happened to be one of the most celebrated movie stars of the twentieth century.

“Eloquent and perceptive. . . Levy’s meticulously researched biography is as revealing a portrait as one could hope for.”Christian Science Monitor

Paul Newman: the man

Superb! Revealing! Heartwarming! Words can't describe how much I enjoyed reading about the man behind the celebrity. what an extraordinary man. Not perfect but, close enough. I admire his love for his wife and family, although sometimes strained;like all families. "It was a privilege to read "

A Life To Learn From, and Aspire To !

While I can't say I have ever been on the same page as Paul politically,
I can definitely say I have been, and continue to aspire to be more like the man that very few people actually knew !
The man who I have had both the pleasure to have raced with, and the personal torment to have raced with !
He was a fierce competitor on track, and a racer's racer off track !
While I never had the fame and well earned fortune to be able to give so graciously to the children who were so less fortunate than the rest of us in the form of the " Hole In The Wall " camps, or the graciously funded through the
" Newman's Own " brand,
I have tried to much quieter,
take care of the smaller things of families far less fortunate than mine !
Thanks Paul for being that fierce competitor !
And challenging us to do what we can for those who we are able to be there for quietly !
And last, to Marc,
as you prepare yourself to narrate your title biographies, please sir,
learn how to pronounce the names mentioned correctly !
Bobby Rahal, and Graham Rahal are both well known enough for you to have been able to know how to pronounce their names correctly, along with a few noteible others !
A more quality human being than
Paul Newman will be extremely difficult to find !
One of my more highly recommended listens !

he wasn't perfect and I didn't like to hear that because he always seemed to me to be so.

What's not to love about Paul Newman

Would you listen to Paul Newman again? Why?

Maybe. His life was very interesting and the relationships he had with people, also made it fun to listen to, but it could have been edited down a bit.

What other book might you compare Paul Newman to and why?

Can't think of one

What does Marc Cashman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Good narrator

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nothing extreme, but it did make me laugh and tear up at times.

Any additional comments?

Good Bio on Paul. A bit surprise there wasn't more about his relationship with
Robert Redford. Thought they were really close and were more involved in each other lives. I think there should have been more about their relationship.

Charismatic subject makes for great reading

What a man! I listen to a lot of biographies and loved hearing the details of Paul Newman's life and learning what a nonconformist he was. It was so captivating that I think I listened to the whole thing in 2 days. Well written and read--the icing on the cake.
