From best-selling and award-winning author Sara Pennypacker comes a beautifully wrought, utterly compelling novel about the powerful relationship between a boy and his fox. Pax is destined to become a classic, beloved for generations to come.

Pax and Peter have been inseparable ever since Peter rescued him as a kit. But one day, the unimaginable happens: Peter's dad enlists in the military and makes him return the fox to the wild.

At his grandfather's house, 300 miles away from home, Peter knows he isn't where he should be - with Pax. He strikes out on his own despite the encroaching war, spurred by love, loyalty, and grief, to be reunited with his fox.

Meanwhile Pax, steadfastly waiting for his boy, embarks on adventures and discoveries of his own....

Not for kids!

Note: this is a review for parents... spoiler alert if you don't want too much information!!
Somehow from the description of this book I thought it would be a good listen for my 7 year old son. He was definitely drawn into the narrative and was really enjoying the story. But animals die mid-way, and the ending, while not a disaster, sent him into tears. Not as bad as Old Yeller, but you get the idea. A beautiful story. Just not for little kids!

Great audio read!

I listened to this audiobook with my 8 year old son while we traveled in the car over the holidays. He engaged with the characters in the story. By the end he wanted to know if there was a another book because he wants Pax's adventures to continue... 😀

Interesting, you should listen to it!

This book is very interesting and I love it. You should totally listen to it. Every time I can't go to sleep I always go on my tablet. Then, I press on Audible and choose a book I want to listen to. Finally, I put on my head phones lay down and rest and relax, and it actually works!

Bittersweet

Lots of sad parts for my 10 year old daughter to handle. She loves animals and animal stories, but this story required having tissues on hand.

A look at growing up with a special friend

I loved this book. I would like to know more about how the characters fared after the end of the book. The book does not limit your understanding, but opens it up to possibilities. The three important characters are well-developed and special. The minor characters are just that. So, you can focus on the storyteller. You can understand what he learns from his teacher, without being told. The story is so well told! You will carry the story with you long after you finish this book.

Great story to teach kids about love for nature

Warm-hearted and full of courage! A realistic story for both kids and adults, teaching love for nature and kindness toward all species. The ending is about abrupt through. Didn’t have a full resolve.
Over all a very good book!

Loved This Story

I enjoyed this story so much - the author basically told 2 separate stories, and brought them together in the end (2 are like 1). I also enjoyed the narrator for this story.

I am 50+ years old and could appreciate the themes of courage, faithfulness, honesty, etc presented throughout.

I feel 8-10 might be slightly young since a few things might be too sad, but I’m no expert. Overall, a great listen.
