About this listen

In her first novel since winning the Newbery Medal, Katherine Applegate delivers an unforgettable and magical story about family, friendship, and resilience.

Jackson and his family have fallen on hard times. There's no more money for rent, and not much for food, either. His parents, his little sister, and their dog may have to live in their minivan. Again.

Crenshaw is a cat. He's large, he's outspoken, and he's imaginary. He has come back into Jackson's life to help him. But is an imaginary friend enough to save this family from losing everything?

Beloved author Katherine Applegate proves in unexpected ways that friends matter, whether real or imaginary.

Loved it! Didn't want it to end. Wish there was a book two to continue the story.

I listened to this story, in preparation for helping my 3rd grader do a literature study on it. It is a very touching story, and brought tears to my eyes several times. I hope he can appreciate it as much as I did.

Truly delightful! Serious subject with a bit of humor. Having an imaginary friend is ok and there are some families that have a rough time but make the best of it.

The book is meant for younger students but overall it provides a valuable lesson about diversity.

“Enjoy the magic while you can”. Great words to live by! I enjoyed Crenshaw’s wisdom and insight, and how he helped Jackson through difficult times.

Wonderful little story

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

A young boy finds his family on the brink of homelessness, once again. Will he face the facts, learn the facts, or will his IF help him through the reality that his family is struggling once again. Crenshaw tells him to look for the truth, share the truth.

Imaginary friends vs Facts

This book was wonderful! So many people don't understand how it feels to be so poor a person lives in a car or on the street. How many people go to bed hungry. How hard it is for a parent that cannot provide for their children. This book really puts it into perspective. I think people will be less judgemental after reading this book.
