About this listen

A dying man is murdered. A rich man's wife agrees to pay $3,000 for the return of a stolen box of rocks.

A series of odd, inexplicable events is haunting Sergeant Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police and drawing him alone into the Bad Country of the merciless Southwest, where nothing good can survive...including Chee. Because an assassin waits for him there, protecting a 30-year-old vision that greed has sired and blood has nourished. And only one man will walk away.

I love reading Hillerman’s books about my people and the customs. The land descriptions make you feel the powdery sand and the blowing wind and rain. The pure peace and beauty of the area.

I am a Laguna Indian and half Navajo Indian .

content, topic, storyline, characters & thier development, descriptions of the area with details. didn't like that the author suffers that human characteristic of mortality.

Tony Hillerman is a classic story teller in every way.

Love these books! Easy to follow western mystery, culturally rich, masterfully told. George Guidall brings Chee and Leaphorn to life.

Terrific NARRATION. I've already purchased the rest of Hillerman's books. LEAPHORN, CHEE and MANUELITO are interesting characters, the plots and visuals, writing and HISTORY of the Navajo People and NW New Mexico are utterly intriguing. GOTTA HAVE MORE!

AWESOME!

A great reading performance. I remained intrigued throughout the entire story. I believe that the stories written by Mr. Hillerman would make a great film series by Amazon.

Navajo mystery with a dose of anthropology

This is a mystery where you know the “who” and “how” but not the “why”. It unwinds slowly with a lot of Navajo lore as Chee and his friend seek answers and dodge a madman. The narrator is very good and keeps the story moving at a nice pace. Good book.

A Hillerman Book always delights.

Mystery twists and turns..when you think you have it you don’t, when George Guidell reads Hillermans books you sense the respect he has for indigenous people and their traditions, but does not beat you over the head with it, he and Hillerman are an unbeatable combination. You come out of it more knowledgeable and surprised by who did it!,

Great story..fantastic reader….
