Publisher's summary

A dying man is murdered. A rich man's wife agrees to pay $3,000 for the return of a stolen box of rocks.

A series of odd, inexplicable events is haunting Sergeant Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police and drawing him alone into the Bad Country of the merciless Southwest, where nothing good can survive...including Chee. Because an assassin waits for him there, protecting a 30-year-old vision that greed has sired and blood has nourished. And only one man will walk away.

I am a Laguna Indian and half Navajo Indian .

I love reading Hillerman’s books about my people and the customs. The land descriptions make you feel the powdery sand and the blowing wind and rain. The pure peace and beauty of the area.

Tony Hillerman is a classic story teller in every way.

content, topic, storyline, characters & thier development, descriptions of the area with details. didn't like that the author suffers that human characteristic of mortality.

Another great story well told!

Love these books! Easy to follow western mystery, culturally rich, masterfully told. George Guidall brings Chee and Leaphorn to life.

Almost Perfect

intriguing plot, great narration, good pace—enjoyed learning more about Jim Chee, the main character.

Great again

These books are great stories with a " local" flare. This is actually the second time I read this one as I got it for my grandpa in the early 1990s and took photos from a number of the places mentioned in the book. I now have that mini photo album. He is right on with his descriptions with the places. I first moved to the Grants area out of College and I still do alot in that area. love these.

Guidall is the Best Narrator for any Chee/Leaphorn book.

Hillerman’s books have a unique pace that is thoroughly engaging. Highly recommend all of the Leaphorn and Chee series.

A great mystery

A great mystery and a look at another culture. Highly interesting facts dealing with different law-enforcement crossing and how it affects the tribal police. The reader also has a great voice highly recommend it.

One of my favorite book series!

Chee. Leaphorn. Hillerman. Guidall. That is the winning combination! This series runs as a very slow and winding pace, which is perfect for the slow talking din’e. Such a beautiful set of books contrasting the conflict between a life of never ending ambition, and the way of beauty and harmony.

Great story

I loved the story and how all the threads tie back at the end. I also love the cultural lessons woven into this telling of this tale .

Great continuation of Hillerman's series

But what happened to Leaphorn? Why the change to Chee? Story's still good, though.
