About this listen

Chief Inspector Mario Silva and his team have a heavy work load with several high-profile cases. First, a suicide bombing that was apparently the work of a militant Islamist group. Then, a gubernatorial candidate is assassinated in broad daylight at a campaign rally. Could the cases be related? Great plotlines and action

but I really would have liked more individuation in the voices of the characters. Almost all the dialog was in that whispered conspiratorial tone of voice, no matter which character or the nature of the conversation. I suppose it would be a challenge for any narrator to do justice to such an international caste of characters, but realistically I think most of this dialog would benefit from a more assertive voice.

"Hi Ho Silva, A Way"

If you could sum up Perfect Hatred in three words, what would they be?

Note: you must listen at 1.25X speed so that the action and great narration of Jonathan Davis equals.
Good Complex Drama. I will now have to check out J.D. recording of the rest of this series. Wonderful !

What was one of the most memorable moments of Perfect Hatred?

When Silva and sidekick are in the Iquizsu falls helicopter.

Note: I purchased this book due to Jonathan Davis being an exquisite reader of any book set in a Latin country. His suburb knowledge of Spanish enables him to float into a Latin name or description and out again. It is great.

Which scene was your favorite?

I have been to the Argentina side of the great Iquizsu falls so the wonderful description of the area made me feel like I was right there in the action.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had tried to listen to this book once before, 1 x speed, and thought it was too slow.
Since we now can listen at the wonderful new speed 1.25x, it makes so many books come to real life and the action matches what the author intended.

Any additional comments?

I am re-listening to many of my good mysteries at this new speed, WOW!

Kind of a snooze fest

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Don't know if it was the narrator or the story, but it just doesn't grab you and make you want to keep listening.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He does voices very well, but overall, his manner of narration makes you want to take a nap in most places. If he would have read the book with the same enthusiasm he shows in places, it would have been much better. He does have a very soothing voice, but this is supposed to be action? Right? but not so much the way it was narrated.

Great mystery - great setting.

Recommended. Strong writing, great narration, smart mysteries - I really enjoy this Mario Silva series, set in Brazil. Setting gives it some great "flavor!' - and it's hard to beat a great revenge novel. This quote says it well:

"Perfect Hatred is a perfect thriller. No one writes the cold glint of evil in bright sunlight the way Leighton Gage does. And there's enough evil here—and heroism, too—for three lesser books."
—Timothy Hallinan, Edgar-nominated author of the Poke Rafferty thrillers and the Junior Bender mysteries
