Critic reviews

"The pace is frenetic, the fear and paranoia palpable, and the characters heartbreakingly honest. Iles strikes not one false note.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

“Would make James Lee Burke or even Pat Conroy proud. This is storytelling at its absolute best, a tale of near-epic status.” (Providence Sunday Journal)

“A superb legal-conspiracy thriller that brings the deep South to life…an enthralling tale.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Good story, somewhat predictable

Well written and nicely finished. Strong characters but somewhat stereotypical. Repetitive dialog was ignorable not bad enough to be irritating.
Narration was ok, not exceptional but didn't often distract from the story line.
Not sure I'd be willing to wade into another Mississippi bayou with Mr Iles but the book was mostly pleasurable.

BEST BOOK I'VE LISTENED TO! 10 STARS!!

I enjoyed this book on so many levels and can't wait to read the next book by this author. the storyline was exciting the characters were interesting there was a little bit of everything that you might want in a novel like this. I always feel like I can guess how things will turn out before it happens but there were actually moments where I was so surprised by what had just happened that I had to rewind the book and listen to it again! Really really awesome book!

A fascinating look at Southern mystique

This is a great story beautifully narrated by Tom
Stechschulte. The characters are believable and Iles paints a picture of an old southern city with secrets crime. racial distrust. and murder, involving many of the city's most important citizens. The protagonist Pen Cage,
moves back to this city Natchez, his home town, and becomes an unwilling disruptive force. with threats against his life, and family he uncovers secrets and solves a murder. Good book, hard to stop listening. Janice GW

Liked the story

Being from the South, I really like this story. Not told with the usual bad mouthing, putting the South down. Was real in the since that there are good and bad in both black and white.

Spell binding from beginning to end

This was my first time listening to this author and I will definitely listen to more of his books. I like the complex life of the main character, the southern setting and the different directions he took the story line. The narrator was great and enhanced the telling of this story. Portions of this story were at times a bit unrealistic but this book still keep my interest. If you like books that are part of a series this is a great listen. This book was the first in a series by this author and I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series.

Expected More

Hmm. I have mixed emotions about this book. I feel that it was very well articulated. The story? That's a different opinion. To me, it was extremely drawn out. There were certain "key" issues that Cage could have picked up on, a lot earlier. I was also irritated that he kept pining for a woman who clearly wasn't sharing the same feelings. I was built up for a dramatic ending, just to be left feeling empty. It was suboptimal, at best.
