About this listen

Three-year-old Lexie, five-year-old Amelie and thirteen-year-old Leo come to Maggie after Leo confesses to a teacher that his mother's addiction problems and her latest violent relationship has left him as the sole carer to his younger sisters.

Maggie welcomes the three children into her home, and is touched by the gentle care Leo shows to the two little girls. It is clear that Lexie and Amelie adore their big brother, and rely on him for comfort and reassurance. But Leo has experienced the neglect and abuse of his mother and her partner for far longer than his sisters, and is struggling with an eating disorder and showing signs of OCD.

When Social Services begin to look at adoptive families for the children, Maggie is horrified when Social Services suggest that the two angelic little girls will have a much better chance of being adopted without their damaged older brother. Knowing the impact that losing his sisters forever will have on vulnerable Leo, they face the ultimate dilemma. Should the children stay together and dash the hope of them ever having a forever family? Or do they sacrifice the close bond between the siblings to give the girls a chance to be adopted?©2019 Maggie Hartley (P)2019 Orion Publishing Group

This book seriously resonates with me more so than her other fantasic books. Leo's story pulled at my heart strings so badly because I could relate to him on so many levels. I had a self harm addiction for 9 years of my life and I wish I could have had someone as understanding and caring as Maggie by my side. This book is an amazing and, in my opinion, super important story to listen to. So many people dont understand self harm and dont know how to properly deal with the situation. Thank you so much for sharing this story and I look forward to listening to even more of your stories. This is definatly a book you don't want to miss out on!

An excellent yet heart wrenching story!

It was a great book that was extremely raw and real. Unfortunately this does happen in the foster system. Maggie did a great job with this tear jerker

Heartbreaking reality of the foster system

This book was amazing and gripping up until the last page. It is so sad that families have to be sometimes separated but it is also such a blessing that the children in these heart breaking stories have loving people like Maggie to help them through.

Tears through most of the end of the book. As an adopted child myself I was lucky to have a family that took both my brother and myself. Thank you for sharing this story. Xxx

Maggie Hartley gives a glimpse into the life of a foster parent and the struggles of the children taken into the care system. A must read for anyone interested in social work!

you made me absolutely fall in love with Leo and I sobbed huge tears for an hour when they took his sister's.i was so angry that social services didn't even consider placing them together. and I'm sorry but the family that took the girls are horrible how can you take 2 and leave one behind. I've listened to all of your books and this one physically hurt me
