About this listen

She was a bewitching young girl, that pretty Polly Marsh, and she knew it. She also knew that beauty could be her passport into the castles where she had always known she belonged. So she set her sights on a duke and joined the firm of Westerman’s as a stenographer. Surely one of that noble family would notice her, and then all her dreams would come true! The trouble with pretty Polly Marsh was that she just didn’t know her place. But others did - and were only too happy to remind her that dashing Lord Peter was merely playing at love when he appeared to be paying her court. The duchess was beside herself. Peter’s brother, the starchy Marquis of Wollerton, was desperate to pry Peter from Polly’s side. But Polly was determined to have Peter - and her dream. Peter wouldn’t betray her, would he?

In this whirlwind series, Marion Chesney brings us spirited, independent women who are at once bewitching, beguiling, and determined to have their say and make their mark on both their world and the world at large, be it within their social circle or extending beyond. With their arms wide open, these women are absolutely original and unforgettable, as are the tales in which they are featured. Here is life, in all of its folly and foibles, in a dizzying place where dreams are both shattered and made.

Typical style of the Author

This was funny in spots and in line with the authors other work. The flimsy excuses for cheating and /or leaving one’s spouse was far fetched. I don’t think it added much to the book. It actually took away from the cute main storyline.

Sabrina, but even better

This one has major Sabrina vibes for me but I don't even mind bc a.) Sabrina is a great story and b.) I can't help picturing Edward as middle-aged Harrison Ford. You will love love LOVE Polly's parents. Her mother is a wonder and her dad's scene with the duchess is one of the funniest and best Mrs. Beaton has ever written in a romance tale. It rivals some of her Agatha Raisin scenes for pure humor! This is honestly the best of her romances I have read bc the characters grow and mature, but never lose the amusing wonder of their authentic selves. Also, no one is perfect in it. Edward & Polly are by turns a pain in the rump, but they are always endearing. This will be a repeat for me. Narrator Dore, who in some books can be too stiff, also does a nice job with this one. I definitely recommend!

not my favorite

this one wasn't my favorite. there was way too much unnecessary adultery. the narration was pretty bad. i don't mind Charlotte anne dore in some of the other books, but i didn't like the way she did the voices in this one.

Meandering Story - ill-conceived - lacking

Story without firm or intelligent direction, though many attempts at romance, no couple had a relationship to be emulated or desired. As a romance, a failure but able to fill time in a not too unpleasant way

Usually a fan of MC Beaton

I’ve read probably over 50 books of MC Beaton and usually really like them for entertainment purposes. This one has way too much infidelity in it. I was overall depressing and disappointing that everyone had such lack morals. Cheating on spouses is wrong and somehow this book made it seem ok. Not a fan.

Not Regency! >.<

The title reads Polly: Regency love, book 13 (at least to me), which really made it hard for me to get into the groove with this one. It's actually set in the edwardian era, which is fine, but it's a little off putting in the way of expecting pudding and receiving mashed potatoes instead- still totally delicious just not at all what you were hoping for.

Stilted delivery

The story is a classic M.C.Beaton historical romance.it really helped once I sped the playback up to 1.1 x as otherwise the narrators over-enunciating plodded along painfully.

Something different

I listen to a lot of regency romances and for the most part they are alike, but I that doesn't bother me. In fact thats why i enjoy them. The format works why change it. It just doesn't make for a very interesting review so I rarely write one. This book however is different, and different really works this time. I suggest reading this book and experience a different regency romance.

This writer always delivers

Similar storyline, yet always hilarious. Similar formula as the Stephanie Plum series. Entertaining, harmless fun. Sometimes I wish the characters were just a bit more.
