About this listen

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, The Host is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

Exceptional

Like most great science fiction this novel very believably examines human reaction to a future very different from the world we live in now. I don't know anything about this author's other work, but this novel is a very adult examination of love, loyalty, and the very essence of what it means to be human. It is nice to see a book from a female perspective that I would still consider "hard" science fiction. While we learn perhaps a great deal more about the emotional lives of the characters than we would in an offering from Heinlein or Herbert, the writing is unflinching in the examination of difficult questions and felt quite plausible from beginning to end. This book is one of my new favorites.

original and interesting

Sci-fi for the non-science fiction reader. Just a good, enjoyable story with a poignant touch that gently encourages the reader to appreciate what it means to be human.

Her best

As much as I am a fan of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, I have to admit this book is by far her best work. The concept of the Soul body snatchers doesn't seem very original but the way she works with the idea of an alien race taking over Earth for humanity's own good and then having a few Souls regret the decision is very unique. Even though most of the novel takes place in an isolated contained location, there is so much going on that you don't even realize how small of a world the main characters reside in. I think she really captured true human nature here. The narrating was good. I don't think there is one bad thing I can say about this book, other than the fact that I wish it hadn't ended.

One of the Best!

It really is, simply, one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to. I've enjoyed the author's Twilight series and looked forward to The Host, as an "adult" level reading. Once I started the book, I couldn't stop listening! I tried (oh, to make the book last longer!) but was too drawn in to the relationships built between the characters. It was definitely more a study of human development and interaction than a straight sci-fi story, but the alien aspect was well thought out and extremely believable. I would highly, highly recommend this book to any reader, whether you are in to science fiction or not. I can't wait to listen to this book again!

Wonderful!

I read this book because I loved the Twilight series and wanted more from Meyer. It was better than I expected. I am not a SciFi reader but I was completely hooked by chapter 3. Stephenie Meyer is an amazing author. I can't wait to read more from her.

Impressive

This book was just as captivating as Twilight, I could never put my iPod down listening to this on a recent vacation. The plot had many twists and turns, and despite it being long, it never felt tedious or boring.
