About this listen

Master Hugh won the Black Prince’s favor when he helped to ease the Prince’s illness. Now, in the autumn of 1372, the prince is suffering a relapse and sends to Bampton for Master Hugh to attend him.

While at dinner in Kennington Palace, Sir Giles, the knight who escorted Hugh to London, is stricken and dies. Poison! Sir Giles is not popular, and there are many who would gladly see the fellow done away with, except for Prince Edward.

The Black Prince feels a debt to the slain man because of his heroic behavior at the Battle of Crécy, where the knight stood firm with the prince when the fight seemed of uncertain outcome. Despite caring little for Sir Giles, Master Hugh must once again place himself in jeopardy and seek to uncover the perpetrator of the crime.

Very enjoyable series of well-written mysteries! The author is knowledgeable about the historic time period and meshes events with actual occurrences. Excellent!

Fascinating Series

I have read 11 of the 12 books in this series and generally enjoyed them quite a lot. This one, filled with felonious nobles with various motives, committing murder with nary a scruple, was a rough read. The plot was wrapped up at the end with several lose threads and with a slap on the wrist for multiple murders because the murderers were members of the aristocracy is too close to what goes on today to be satisfying. There were some high points as well, including the wonderful narration. I will be sad to reach the end of this series and wonder if perhaps Mel Starr has any plans to either start a new one or add more chapters to the tales of Sir Hugh de Singleton.

Great narration, disappointing story

This is the 4th of the Mel Starr books that I’ve listened to and I enjoy each one more than the last. The protagonist, Master High is intelligent, humble and dogged in his role of Balif in late 1300’s England. The plots are intricate and the narration by Tim Bruce is flawless.

Hugh de Singleton is a wonderful protagonist. Seeking out murderers and corruption and setting obnoxious doctors straight!

Love escaping to 14th century

I absolutely adore these tales of Hugh DeSingleton! and i always wonder, has anyone else noticed these little mentionings of planets? 😆 Mars wasn't discovered till 1610, but here we are in 1372 discussing the influence of planets on people's humors.😂 i am not criticizing! it all amuses me a great deal!😁 i was just wondering if anyone else noticed. the first mentioning of Venus was several books back and i thought i just misheard it, but no, here they are again!😆 so funny! forgive me! i do love these books though, wholeheartedly so! i listened to them all and can't wait for the 13th to be narrated!

Love these series!

I so enjoy thsee tales spun by Mel Starr set in the 14th century. The characters are believable, the settings seemingly historical, and the vocabulary, while stretching, adds to the authenticity. My only disappointment is that I can read (listen to) these much faster than the author can write them, and I will soon be out of new episodes to read. :(

Never disappointed with a book in this series.

I’ve enjoy Mr Starr’s Medieval series of Master Hugh as I sew. The reading is spot on and the stories are fascinating and historically accurate.

Always a Great Listen!
