Publisher's summary

Disaster strikes a wagon train en route to Texas, leaving 18-year-old Abby in charge of the survivors—all children younger than her. After an attempted kidnaping, the others convince her to disguise herself as a boy. Initially reluctant, Abby soon realizes life on the trail is much easier without bulky skirts. The disguise allows her to do things as "Abner" she couldn't do as Abby. It's intoxicating.

Disfigured by fire as a child, Manny, a young cowboy, is lonely and yearns for companionship. His scars and the judgment of townspeople make it difficult for him to trust others. He intercepts the wagon train and agrees to help the children finish the trip to San Antonio. A new friendship cracks the protective walls built around his heart. Hope blooms when he meets "Abner," and Manny's fear of rejection slowly dissolves.

As the weeks on the trail go by, Abby develops romantic feelings for Manny, and he values his first new friendship in years. When Manny discovers her deception, it destroys the fragile bond of friendship growing between them.

Can God help the two young lovers find trust, faith, and forgiveness on the hot Texas plain?

Action, romance, sorrow, and hope

The kids’ grit and determination to see their parents’ dreams of a new start in San Antonio hooked me from page 1. Abigail’s strength and care for those dropped into her charge was believable and heartwarming. The romance was well developed as was the conflict. I definitely recommend this story. The narrator did a good job with the various accents.

Gritty with hope

This debut novel by Paula Peckham about children stranded on the Texas prairie gripped me from page one. The story deepens into an unlikely romance, with twists and turns throughout. The narrator enhanced the experience with her spot-on accents. I can’t wait for Book 2, Accepted, to be released! Highly recommend Protected!

Wonderful developed story of action and love.

“Protected” is a heartfelt story of love and care for orphaned wagon train children. From the first sentence the reader is pulled into the story. Abby an 18 year old as oldest survivor of the 4 families must use her strategies to save all the children’s lives and get them to San Antonio. The story is full of excitement and love. The Love of the Lord is shown as He guides them to a new life. I loved the characters and especially, Abby and Manny. The narration by Christy Lou brings every character to life in the reader’s mind. Each of their voices has the ability to make you laugh, cry, and live in anticipation of what would happen next in these children’s lives. I cannot wait to listen to Book 2 in this San Antonio Series. Thank you to author Paula Peckham and narrator Christy Lou! Blessings to you both.
