About this listen

There are two things Navy SEAL Jazz Zeringue knows:

1) his black ops team will always have his back, and 2) there's nothing more enticing than a woman of mystery

When the best of intentions gets Jazz arrested overseas, he couldn't be more surprised to find Vivi Verreau ready to spring him out of jail. Obviously more than the civilian she claims to be, he's sure Vivi is hiding an agenda...and he's determined to stick by her side until he uncovers all her secrets.

A covert agent who shrouds herself in disguises, and who fearlessly jumps into dangerous situations without thoughts for her own safety, Vivi has no need for a protector. But if she is to have any hope of completing her most important mission, she'll have no choice but to recruit Jazz and his men.

And when everything explodes around them, they will need each other more than they ever imagined...

Can't go wrong with Gennita Low's SEALs!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I can, and I have. When there are phrases and words in other languages, I always wonder if I am saying them right in my head as I am reading. It is nice to actually hear them spoken. I know others who feel the same way.

What did you like best about this story?

I particularly like the way the author paces her stories. Just when things get really intense, she throws in a little humor to lighten the mood.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Foley’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not had the good fortune to hear him before, but I will keep an eye (or ear) out for him in the future! There was a wide variety of accents for him to deal with - Cajun French, Asian, more classic French, and of course American, and he handled them all extremely well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! Suspense, action, humor, and steamy romance - what more could you want?

A whole lot of Jazz and a side of Navy SEALs

If you could sum up Protector in three words, what would they be?

Hot. Dangerous. Deadly.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. All of Gennita Low's books keep you on the edge. Of a cliff. Her books are intense and she knows how to bring you totally submerged into the story. She makes you want to read/listen to the whole story all at once. Anyone who is familiar with Gennita knows she can have you thinking the plot is going in one direction and you think you have it figured out, then she turns the tables on you and is taking things into a totally different direction.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Foley’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I have never listened to Kevin Foley. This is my first time. This is my first audible book ever.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This whole book totally moved me because it is the first book of Gennita's that I have read and I fell in love with Jazz. For that reason alone he will forever be my favorite SEAL. But within his story, the moment that moved me the most was when they were in the bar and he wanted to help Rosie. It was a bittersweet moment and all he wanted to do was to protect an innocent girl from evil men. He paid a price for it, but it also led him to his future.

Any additional comments?

We get to meet Jazz and Hawk's SEAL teams. All of Gennita's characters are full of life and have different quirks and traits that make them unique. All her books are interlocked together and if you read one, just like Lay's, you can't stop til you read them all. Cannot wait for Warrior and Virtually One to come out. In every book she writes, Gennita is always upping the ante and bringing us closer to Jed's revenge for his brothers and Gems.

outstanding!

This is one of the best seal books I've ever read. Kevin Foley did an outstanding job as narrator. His voice as the character Jazz was absolutely panty melting. Lol

Protector : Crossfire Series

This was an excellent book. It's the first book I've had by Gennita Low and she did an outstanding job with the story. Kevin Foley brought the story to life in the Audiobook, and I so enjoyed the personalities he brought out in the narration. You'll love the twists and turns throughout. The action and romance will keep you riveted for hours.

Sorry..

I think, at 20% (Chapter 6) I’m done with this book. It’s boring and going nowhere. 373 pages are just going to go on and on, and I can’t do that. I bought the Audible with the Kindle version because I just like to read along, yet not read it myself. Unfortunately, the narrator sucks at doing Jazz’s voice. He should never have tried to do a Louisiana accent, because he can’t do it. He made Hawk’s voice very sexy but this isn’t Hawk’s book, is it. He also made Vivi’s French accent very nice. But that doesn’t make up for Jazz’s bad accent or how boring the book it.

I think if you dropped about 100 pages it would be a better book. I know there’s going to be sex between Jazz and Vivi but there is NOTHING so far that’s going to lead up to it. No sexual tension, no wanting, no desire, no nothing, so WTH kind of sex can there possibly be? I know some readers would call it “hot and steamy” but how can it be that if nothing leads up to it.

Anyway, I appreciate all you readers that LOVED it but it’s not for me. When I read I want the book to be fast moving and this one isn’t.

99% of the time when I can’t finish a book I still give it 3 stars, just to be fair to the author.

As to the narrator: I said my reasons in the upper review. He totally SUCKED at the hero's voice.

My wait is over! Bring on The Protector...

Where does Protector rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

My commute is between 2.5 and 3.5+ hours a day so I listen to ALOT of audiobooks. I have been waiting for this series for a long time and it did not disappoint. Definitely one of my top favorites audiobooks.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This is part of a series with characters who show up throughout Ms. Low's books. She is such a delicious writer. She brings out different and compelling reactions to each book she writes and characters she introduces. Her main character focus in this novel is Jazz and Vivi. Sexy, sexy, sexy. A Cajun accented hero and a French accented heroine with a sizzling attraction, but Ms. Low also teases us readers with appearances by T, Hawk, Shahruhk (my most intriguing hero-crush), the hottie Jed, the bold Cucumber, and many other characters her fans LOVE (and want more of).

Which scene was your favorite?

I love the scenes where Jazz meets with Grandmamasan. I won't tell you why to spoil the surprise, but it's funny. His relationship with Grandmamasan sets the rhythm for the growing relationship between Jazz and Vivi. I also enjoyed the scenes where Vivi - and now Jazz and his Seal team - try to defeat the child sex-traffickers. It's a tough situation but an amazing read. The idea that poor parents push their daughters into the sex industry to help out the family and many time are ashamed of them for doing that work while they take the money… well, you know it happens, but Ms. Low took me into their world and showed me the total desperation of their lives. Not only has she entertained me with her writing, she has educated me as well. I love books where I learn something new that makes me Google new topics and expand my mind.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved the scene where Jazz tries to help a young girl who works in the sex industry. His morals, sense of injustice, and kind heart made him make a decision to help a young girl in the worst possible of situations and he ends up getting into trouble for doing the honorable thing. No regrets. It is just what you do. Who doesn't want to know someone who fights for justice, even if it inconveniences them?

Any additional comments?

The voice over actor Kevin Foley did a great job. His transitions from one character to the next was seamless, especially doing the the women's voices. He flowed through the different accents and male/female voices like a pro and trust me, after listening to hundreds and hundreds of books it is not everyone's forte, but he pulled it off. Listening to her novels is such a different experience than reading it. Mr. Foley brought an even deeper richness to the story line that I hope he does the rest of the series and soon (because I'm a greedy book lover).

The thing about Ms. Low's books is that each book is apart of her "epic" story arch/series. I think the readers who may struggle with it expect it to be like every other Romantic Suspense and that's indeed is a struggle. Ms. Low writes outside the "formula", plus she writes with a very strong masculine POV (she's a roofer in real life and works predominantly with men, so she's been let into the male world in a way most women are not). Some of readers might not immediately gravitate towards this type of grittiness, which is too bad for them. I say, give it a try and enjoy a different kind of suspense novel. You will fall in love with her work and you too will be hounding her for more of "her men".

loved it

What made the experience of listening to Protector the most enjoyable?

I think Kevin Foley's voice made it so much more vivid

Who was your favorite character and why?

Do I have to pick? I love them all.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Foley’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, this is the first time I listened to a book narrated by him. Love his voice.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Life of a SEAL and what he does best, protect!

Any additional comments?

I recommend this or any of the other books by Gennita Low. I read all in the Crossfire series. Looking forward to listening to the rest of them. Thank you for a very enjoyable listen.
