Publisher's summary

This book, by author Javier A. Hernandez, highlights and explores the major U.S. colonial policies imposed on Puerto Rico and how such colonial acts and policies failed to destroy the Puerto Rican Nation and Independence Movement. By resisting, surviving, and overcoming these colonial policies and atrocities, today, Puerto Rico’s pro-independence and pro-sovereignty movements are growing not just in Puerto Rico, but also in the diaspora communities in the United States.

Due to decades of colonial indoctrination in Puerto Rico, whole generations do not know about these colonial atrocities and historical events, such as the Rio Piedras and Ponce massacres; the revolts against Spanish and U.S. colonial rule; the persecutions and repression against the pro-independence movement; the racist assimilation policies; the imposition of English; the use of Puerto Rican women as guinea pigs; the negative political, economic, social, and psychological impacts of colonialism; and much more.

This book aims to promote more education and discussion about these colonial policies, atrocities, and other important colonial issues impacting Puerto Rico.

The author believes that “an educational system under a sovereign Puerto Rican government will be paramount in the mission to eradicate the colonial mentality (a psychological disease) from future generations. Puerto Ricans need to know about their past in order to better forge a more prosperous and democratic future. It’s time for Puerto Rico to unshackle itself from colonialism via education, national self-consciousness, and resistance to become the free, sovereign, democratic, and prosperous nation it is destined to be in the world”.

The author states that “one day, Puerto Rico will cease being the world’s oldest colony and become the world’s newest sovereign nation. As Puerto Ricans, it is our duty and responsibility to future generations of Puerto Ricans that they inherit a free and democratic nation, not a decrepit, dependent, and shameful colony”.

This book will surely enrage, motivate, and make Puerto Ricans question, defy, and resist colonialism and decide to fight for freedom.
