About this listen
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
A new panoramic history of Puerto Rico from pre-Columbian times to today! For centuries, Puerto Ricans have crafted and negotiated complex ideas about nationhood. Meléndez-Badillo provides a new history of Puerto Rico, highlighting the vibrant cultures of the archipelago in the centuries before the arrival of Columbus, and capturing the full sweep of Puerto Rico's turbulent history in the centuries that followed, from the first indigenous insurrection against colonial rule by the powerful chieftain Agüeybaná II, to the establishment of the Commonwealth in 1952.
Puerto Rico is an engaging, sometimes personal, and consistently surprising history of colonialism, revolt, and the creation of a national identity, offering new perspectives not only on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean but also on the United States and the Atlantic world.

He then moves backward in time to the ancestors of the Tainos-two successive groups who settled the West Indies and who are known to archeologists as the Saladoid peoples and the Ostionoid peoples.

Story
On October 12, 1492, one of the most important “first contacts” of the modern era was made when three ships of Spanish origin approached the island archipelago now known as the Bahamas, cautiously dropping anchor as the captain of the fleet gazed across to what he assumed was the coast of India. According to the popular version of the story, amazed at the sight of ships and men of such unfamiliar appearance, the native people of the island plunged into the clear waters of the western Atlantic, expertly swimming or aboard dugout canoes, and came out to greet the strangers.

Story
Against the backdrop of America's escalating urban rebellions in the 1960s, an unexpected cohort of New York radicals unleashed a series of urban guerrilla actions against the city's racist policies and contempt for the poor. Their dramatic flair, uncompromising vision, and skillful ability to link local problems to international crises riveted the media, alarmed New York's political class, and challenged nationwide perceptions of civil rights and black power protest. The group called itself the Young Lords.

By resisting, surviving, and overcoming these colonial policies and atrocities, today, Puerto Rico’s pro-independence and pro-sovereignty movements are growing not just in Puerto Rico, but also in the diaspora communities in the United States. Due to decades of colonial indoctrination in Puerto Rico, whole generations do not know about these colonial atrocities ...

The history from beginning to end.
This book explains well the history from beginning to the end from the days of the taínos, the colonization from Spain, transition to the USA and until present day. Very informative though I am Puerto Rican but wasn’t raised on the island or born there, im intrigued by my islands history, culture and language. Viva Puerto Rico !

Recomiendo el audiolibro “How to Hide an Empire“, de Daniel Immerwahr.
