About this listen

In Fantasy Island, Ed Morales traces how, over the years, Puerto Rico has served as a colonial satellite, a Cold War Caribbean showcase, a dumping ground for US manufactured goods, and a corporate tax shelter. He also shows how it has become a blank canvas for mercenary experiments in disaster capitalism on the frontlines of climate change, hamstrung by internal political corruption and the US federal government's prioritization of outside financial interests.

Story
On October 12, 1492, one of the most important “first contacts” of the modern era was made when three ships of Spanish origin approached the island archipelago now known as the Bahamas, cautiously dropping anchor as the captain of the fleet gazed across to what he assumed was the coast of India. According to the popular version of the story, amazed at the sight of ships and men of such unfamiliar appearance, the native people of the island plunged into the clear waters of the western Atlantic, expertly swimming or aboard dugout canoes, and came out to greet the strangers.

Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

Story
The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Story

Story
This book, by author Javier A. Hernandez, highlights and explores the major U.S. colonial policies imposed on Puerto Rico and how such colonial acts and policies failed to destroy the Puerto Rican Nation and Independence Movement. By resisting, surviving, and overcoming these colonial policies and atrocities, today, Puerto Rico’s pro-independence and pro-sovereignty movements are growing not just in Puerto Rico, but also in the diaspora communities in the United States. Due to decades of colonial indoctrination in Puerto Rico, whole generations do not know about these colonial atrocities ...

Story
Drawing on archeological and ethno-historical evidence, Irving Rouse sketches a picture of the Tainos-the first people Columbus encountered when he arrived in the Americas-as they existed during the time of Columbus, contrasting their customs with those of their neighbors. He then moves backward in time to the ancestors of the Tainos-two successive groups who settled the West Indies and who are known to archeologists as the Saladoid peoples and the Ostionoid peoples.

A snowflake in Puerto Rico
(I'm born and raised in PR)
Well, if you want to read the history of Puerto Rico through communist decinstructionist eyes, this is your book. As it is with those philosophies, this book is full of a long list of internal logical contradictions in its arguments.
Everything is seen through the lens of oppression and victimhood: the elite vs the poor, white vs non white, Spanish vs Criollo, Puerto Rican vs US, gender reality vs gender ideology, etc. At one point it makes the laughable insinuation that there was a thriving queer culture in PR before 1898, but it was squashed when the Americans arrived. Right.
The author criticizes the discrimination that Puerto Ricans have experienced in mainland US, but then complains about all the mainlanders who come as tourists or buy land and move here. He even celebrates the anti-tourist graffiti "Yankee go home!" I think he needs a time out to think a little.
Also, all his ideas are mainstream in liberal American elite universities. There he has learned to criticize elite Americans and their Puerto Ricans who bring back foreign ideas, hmm.
He constantly celebrates every protest there has ever been in the island (yes, that's what it is: a history of protesting in PR). Even if those are terrorist attacks where people were killed, the author exalts the activists. Again, his Marxist philosophy cuts through: there has to be violence in order to bring change.
One thing I can agree on: he calls out the corruption in the government. It's true, that has been there forever and it keeps the island from moving forward. Actually, if it weren't for FBI roads every few years, it would he even worse.
He has done his research, but only to prove what he decided is his truth.
Don't waste your time.
