About this listen

Dorina Basarab is a dhampir - the feared and hated cross between a vampire and a human - or so she has always believed. She spent most of her life on the fringes of her two worlds, yearning to belong to one or the other, but despised and distrusted by both. Recently, a war in the supernatural community allowed her to get a foothold into her vampire father's world, one of danger, intrigue, glitz, and glamour, where she found not only a home, but a lover, too. For the first time in centuries, life seemed to be going her way. But now, an incident with a dangerous magical device has left her two natures separated into duplicate bodies, both fighting to survive while they search for the truth about their past and the key to their future.

Contains mature themes.

Why!

I knew I would enjoy this book so much that I tried not to read it for fear of what the last page would do to me. And sadly I was right to avoid listening to the newest Dory book. There was the usual action, adventure, and laugh so hard moments. But I particularly enjoyed the scenes of Dory and Louise Ceasar figuring out their way in love and work. Also the deeper look we get of Dorina and who she is and how she came to be (total bada**). At the end of this book all I could think was" that was so awesome, now I'm so sad it's over with and I guess I'll just sit here lost and alone". Keep up the great work Ms. Chance

Great filler is still filler

As i say above the book is great, buuuut it feels like filler to me. Karen had a story she wanted to tell but first she had to get to the point where that story would work... and here we are, a really long, if enjoyable, prologue. there is one thing that happens at the very beginning and one important piece of info revealed, the rest of the book pretty much just gets us to the set up of the next book. so i would call this Queen's Gambit part 1. There isn't much to clique here, it's a pretty standard Karen Chance book. Funny characters, funny situations, crazy chaotic actions, a disdain for shoes, and so much info on ancient mythology and various real life interpretations of it, as well as the books own interpretations, to make your head spin. Though i did find myself thinking that it was really unbelievable that magic and supernaturals were still a widely held secret....HOW? lol In the end the book did the job it was supposed to, make me really excited for the next one. I really, really, REALLY need some D and D 1on 1 time. This book was fine as it goes but the whole time i was kind of disappointed they didn't go to faerie together.

Another great installment

Ray just keeps getting better and better. Dorina wouldn’t survive Faerie without him. But to be fair, the life-saving is mutual.

Dori finally gets some real respect. I’m liking the African court. And lots of fun with my favorite Asian senator.

Yes, the book leaves things unresolved, but I didn’t finish it until after the sequel was released, so that didn’t bother me much. ;-)

Questions answered.

Dory and Dorina have been split apart and Dorina kidnapped. For once in her life she has her own body and can make choices for herself. She and Ray, Dory’s second are taken to Faerie Knut by whom? Of course they escape their captors and are pursued across Garriewith no answers as to why and who are behind the kidnapping. Dory and Louie-Ceasar go to magic Hong Kong to look for Dorina and become embroiled in a war of animated magical advertisement creature who get their strength from any magic, Both couples face impossible odds. Dorina adjusts to control of her life and reflects on her childhood. It is a page turner with fantastic narration.

Karen Chance Awesome!

The book was very good. All KC’s books are great. The combination of action, pace, and humor is exemplary. She has a unique way of bringing you into the action, holding you there by the seat of your pants, and making you laugh all at the same time. Great book, great author!!! A MUST read.

Love this series

This series just gets better and better. I always forget how funny it is and then I start listening and want to go back and listen all of them all over again. It has now come to the point where I don’t know if I like Dori or Dorian better, isn’t that wonderful. I won’t say anymore least I give too much away, I’ll end by saying, WHEN IS THE NEXT ONE COMING OUT!!

Amazing, I can’t wait for the next book!

This was one of the best books ever! I am dying for the next in the series which is already a favorite but this one left me sad when it ended and so hopeful for the next part of the story. Joyce Bean was amazing as always and conveys such emotion and thought with her voice!

Good story

Enjoyed the story. It will be interesting to see if things will go back to how they were or if the twins will remain psychologically and physically separated. Looking forward to the next book! The narrator did a fantastic job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene.
