About this listen

"Narrator Susan Ericksen's performance vibrates with energy, as she portrays old and new characters in this series." —AudioFile on Desperation in Death, an Earphones Award winner.

In the new crime thriller from #1
New York Times-bestselling J.D. Robb, a small and easily concealed weapon wreaks havoc, and the killer is just a face in the crowd.

Jenna’s parents had finally given in, and there she was, at a New York club with her best friends, watching the legendary band Avenue A, carrying her demo in hopes of slipping it to the guitarist, Jake Kincade. Then, from the stage, Jake catches her eye, and smiles. It’s the best night of her life.

It’s the last night of her life.

Minutes later, Jake’s in the alley getting some fresh air, and the girl from the dance floor comes stumbling out, sick and confused and deathly pale. He tries to help, but it’s no use. He doesn’t know that someone in the crowd has jabbed her with a needle—and when his girlfriend Nadine arrives, she knows the only thing left to do for the girl is call her friend, Lieutenant Eve Dallas.

After everyone on the scene is interviewed, lab results show a toxic mix of substances in the victim’s body—and for an extra touch of viciousness, the needle was teeming with infectious agents. Dallas searches for a pattern: Had any boys been harassing Jenna? Was she engaging in risky behavior or caught up in something shady? But there are no obvious clues why this levelheaded sixteen-year-old, passionate about her music, would be targeted.

And that worries Dallas. Because if Jenna wasn’t targeted, if she was just the random, unlucky victim of a madman consumed by hatred, there are likely more deaths to come.

Critic reviews

"Puts the 'procedure' rewardingly back into the police procedural." —Kirkus

"With the fifty-eighth irresistibly readable entry in the ever-popular Eve Dallas series, Robb (Payback in Death, 2023) continues to showcase her mastery when it comes to creating inventive plots generously spiked with nail-biting suspense and populated with compelling characters, including Eve, who never stops working to bring justice to the victims in every murder case she investigates." --Booklist

The great house project!!

The great house project is my favorite part of this installment of Eve Dallas. The friendship growth and development between all the characters is what to me, makes this series top tier. Definitely 10 out of 10!!! Can't wait for the next one J.D!!

Never a disappointment and waiting with bated breath for the next!!

Absolutely love this series. Each book stands on its own and I enjoy all the characters development with each book. The story lines are never a repeat of another and leaving me wanting more. Writing is superb and I want to be friends with Eve and Mavis…Rourke is oh la la. Susan Ericksen is the perfect narrator, I would be upset if that changed!! This book in particular gave me all the feels and had me reaching for a tissue more than once. As a mother you want your kids save and emotionally healthy. This hit from every angle. A must read!

Jake

It was nice to see Jake in a different light. His relationship with Nadine has blossomed. Hopefully he will continue to shine.

Her best yet!

So many books in the "In Death" series. Yet Robb managed to create a unique type of murder to close. I enjoyed how Peabody deciphered teenaged slang for Dallas.

Ms. Robb's usual fare.

I have all of the In Death books and listen to most of them repeatedly. This one is just like the others only the names of the victims have changed. I enjoy the regular characters but some new plots would be welcome. Maybe we could get away from children and teens as victims for the next book.

Great story, probably in my top 5 of all the books

Sometimes the character voices didn’t change enough but this was a fantastic read, can’t wait for the next book.

Huge fan. Still love these books

Something would have to go horribly wrong for me to give a bad review and I'm always excited to read a new book by JD Robb. All major characters were touched upon even if briefly. Although characters are well developed at this point in the series I always like when there is more of their stories included. The story is fast paced with excellent descriptions that draw you in and helps visualize the story in your mind. Of course there are flaws (or I'm guessing there is) in the procedural aspects mostly due to the involvement of the expert civilian consultant but who doesn't want Roaurk involved each step of the way?
