About this listen

Remembrance by Rita Woods is a breakout historical debut with modern resonance, perfect for the many fans of The Underground Railroad and Orphan Train.

Remembrance...it’s a rumor, a whisper passed in the fields and veiled behind sheets of laundry. A hidden stop on the underground road to freedom, a safe haven protected by more than secrecy...if you can make it there.

Ohio, present day. An elderly woman who is more than she seems warns against rising racism as a young woman grapples with her life.

Haiti, 1791, on the brink of revolution. When the slave Abigail is forced from her children to take her mistress to safety, she discovers New Orleans has its own powers.

1857 New Orleans - a city of unrest: Following tragedy, house girl Margot is sold just before her 18th birthday and her promised freedom. Desperate, she escapes and chases a whisper.... Remembrance.

Loved it! It kept my imagination's attention. Being Haitian, I enjoyed hearing the Haitian Kreyol language. Bravo!

The story was decent, but it could have been 3 hours shorter. I enjoy long books but they have to keep me interested. I give this story a C+. I would say consolation is needed.

The book was an interesting interpretation of survival, community and the will to remain free.

Not the same old story

A story of resistance, There was resistance to enslavement, These kinds of stories are not often told. The Afro futurist genre is perfect for this tale!

Generational story with empowering twist!

I was very disappointed with a book that had so much potential to be great. Especially the ending, which left me seriously wondering and sad.
Narration was very good!

Powerful! I devoured it! Stayed up all night listening! Though the novel jumps from the past to the present and tells the story of four powerful and compelling women, I found it easy to follow. The story is a mixture of magic, fantasy, and history. It kept me interested and entertained. Great narration! Highly recommend!

Beautiful and engagingly interesting. Full of history and sadness. A Mystical journey between two strong women, whose intense spiritual powers and polar opposite personalities, are forced to work their way back to familiarity - Home. Awesome!

Beautiful Storytelling and Awesone Read

I enjoyed the audio version of Remembrance ...the narrator did a great job. The story was good but I did get thrown of with the going back and forth between characters and time periods. I think the story of remembrance was great and but I didn't see the correlation between the other character Gial other than she probably was descendent of mother Abgail. So that part could have been left out. overall it was a good read It keep me interested in seeing how all the characters would come together in the end.

Enjoyed

This book did not close with any finality. Also, caught an error where the author made a reference to West Virginia which did not even exist at the time...
Didn’t really understand how or why the characters weaved together.

Abrupt ending
