About this listen

Inspired by true events, A More Perfect Union is an epic story of love and courage, desperation and determination, and three people whose lives are inescapably entwined…

Henry O’Toole sails to America in 1848 to escape the famine in Ireland, only to face anti-immigrant prejudice. Determined never to starve again, he changes his surname to Taylor and heads south to Virginia, seeking work as a traveling blacksmith on the prosperous plantations.

Torn from her home and sold to Jubilee Plantation, Sarah must navigate its intricate hierarchy. And now an enigmatic blacksmith is promising her not just the world but also her freedom. How could she say no?

Enslaved at Jubilee Plantation, Maple is desperate to return to her husband and daughter. With Sarah’s arrival, she sees her chance to be reunited at last with her family—but at what cost?

Heartwarming

I found myself not wanting to stop the story (I listen on audible). It kept me intrigued. The narrator’s were good and didn’t have me wondering off . The story has all the emotions. Definitely recommend!

Outstanding plot & character development

This was very well written and performed on this audiobook. I highly recommend this. The author is new but hit it out of the park with this book.

Moving story

The story was touching, but if I did not know that it was based on a true story, I’d say the romance was over the top and not believable. The fact that it is based on the author’s ancestors makes it a quite moving story. The narration was mixed, Gary Furlong was quite good, but I found the women not to be up to the usual quality of the audiobooks I listen to. Their parts were also problematic because they included men’s voices as well. However, I did not let that interfere with my desire to find out what happens to the characters and how they overcome their huge obstacles.

Loved the story…….narration was painful

The 3 narrators were very good when they were speaking in their own character’s voice, but when they had to speak for someone else (for example when Sarah had to narrate as if she was Henry) the narration was horrible. I definitely recommend the book - just not to audible version.

Great listen!

I enjoyed the narrator and the story. This book makes you think about all the prejudices our country has had, and still has and how we have justified them. So good!

The love story

The story and bad interpretation of the Bible and justification of slavery . The self-righteous attitude of the southerners.

Disturbing and…

Disturbing, thought-provoking, and interesting. I enjoyed having multiple voices moving the story forward. Disturbing as it should be as it looks at slavery in its various aspects with its assumptions of religiosity. Also look into hardships experienced by Irish persons escaping starvation in their home country.

Unforgettable

The author has mad skills. SO WELL WRITTEN! Instantly became an all time favorite. The story is an unflinching look at life on a Virginia plantation. You will love this book UNLESS: 1) you like your history sugar coated. 2) you like descriptive sex scenes.
The author and the readers bring characters, with their own perspectives, to life. The plot twists and turns till I found myself yelling advice back at the car speakers. Absolutely wonderful.

The Title Got Me

I was intrigued by the title and the story sucked me in. I enjoyed this book more than expected. Slavery is a theme I don't often read about. This book although fiction gave some historical perspective that reawakened in me the horror of that practice and it's long term consequences on every one in our society.

The story flow was good and the voicing of the author was great.
I was surprised by the ending but I appreciated it.
