Publisher's summary

In 1941, when she was turned into an armed merchant cruiser, the SS Benbecula was already old. Yet even she was needed to protect the vital Atlantic sea lanes. Commander Lindsay, her new captain, had to work desperately to mould the ship’s company - raw recruits and old-timers - into a fighting force. And better than anyone, Lindsay knew this could be his last command, his last chance.

One of the best!

I love Reeman's books and style so I have to admit I am bias, but this book is one of the most riveting WWII naval novels out there. It will fill you with everything from horror to joy and especially pride in the RN while you are along for the ride.

Well Done Fun

Fast paced action war story. Well-developed characters. I am looking forward to listening to more of this authors stories. Americans who rely on hearing aids might have trouble with the fast paced narration so try to listen with the volume up and without distraction - it's worth it!

Another fine sea yarn.

Reeman is kind of a guilty pleasure; he's a one trick pony and there's no doubt you'll ever get a new trick no matter how many you read, but you love it anyway and come back to see that trick again and again. This time around he gave it more feel and a surer touch, as his captain's back story is more interesting than any other I've encountered, his crew has some flavor to them as many were prewar crew of this converted liner into an AMC and thus have old grudged with the Royal Navy to nurse. The obligatory love match didn't even bother me this time; Eve Collins is full of life and has more vivacity to her than most of Reeman's Bond girl creations.

David Rintoul does all the Reeman book narrations and he's a pro at it, though his range doesn't have an infinite number of voices for all the characters, he's still capable of handling the large caste adequately.

If you like sea tales with your WW2 fiction, I'd say Douglas Reeman is a solid option for you to check out.

A stressful, frenetic reading!

I could not get beyond the first chapter. The reader over-acted, rushing from one sentence to another, frentetic, hardly giving the listener a chance to breath. This may well have resulted in an unfair assesment of the book but I will never know; one can only take so much auditory punishment....
