About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author of Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker, an enthralling historical saga that recreates the danger, romance, and sacrifice of an era and brings to life one courageous, passionate American - Mildred Fish Harnack - and her circle of women friends who waged a clandestine battle against Hitler in Nazi Berlin.

After Wisconsin graduate student Mildred Fish marries brilliant German economist Arvid Harnack, she accompanies him to his German homeland, where a promising future awaits. In the thriving intellectual culture of 1930s Berlin, the newlyweds create a rich new life filled with love, friendships, and rewarding work - but the rise of a malevolent new political faction inexorably changes their fate.

As Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party wield violence and lies to seize power, Mildred, Arvid, and their friends resolve to resist. Mildred gathers intelligence for her American contacts, including Martha Dodd, the vivacious and very modern daughter of the US ambassador. Her German friends, aspiring author Greta Kuckoff and literature student Sara Weiss, risk their lives to collect information from journalists, military officers, and officials within the highest levels of the Nazi regime.

For years, Mildred’s network stealthily fights to bring down the Third Reich from within. But when Nazi radio operatives detect an errant Russian signal, the Harnack resistance cell is exposed, with fatal consequences.

Inspired by actual events, Resistance Women is an enthralling, unforgettable story of ordinary people determined to resist the rise of evil, sacrificing their own lives and liberty to fight injustice and defend the oppressed.

An historical fiction about a little known group of German resistance fighters

An interesting and well composed story about an heroic group of German resistance fighters, interwoven with the activities of the daughter of the last American Ambassador to the Third Reich.

Timeline Hooks Events Together

This story develops a chronological sense of Hitler’s rise to power. I never realized the meticulous development of his strangle hold on Germany. Very revealing and a wonderful story of strength, faith and determination.

Intelligent, frightening, historical

If we learn anything from this book is not to repeat history. The bravery and love shows the best of human nature with a background of evilness. An excellent listen, couldn’t put it down.

This story is so important at this time

This is a great fictional story of some very real brave women. The long time span of the book helps to understand how German society fell under the spell of such an evil leadership. Wonderful to learn Mildred is remembered in Wisconsin.

Excellent Audio

I learned so much more about the resistance of WWII. So many men and women helping Jews and printing things to help Germany there were against Hitler and all that him and SS were doing. So many were shot, hung, or starved and beaten. This is an account of what they went through. The performance of the narrator is excellent. Make sure you listen to the end of the author notes.

True Fiction

This was very well written and researched. I want to thank you JC for the time and research you took to give such truth within historical fiction of the disgusting Nazi Regime. May history NEVER repeat itself. To those who think the Holocaust was not real…. I feel sorry for you as there were many Jews and Christians who risked their own lives for something you don’t believe ever happened. Again I thank you JC. A heartbreaking but beautiful story. More than a five star. GBKY

Such a great book!

Author did a great job!! Narrator did a great job! It was however difficult to read and realize this all happened with the approval of the majority but important to be reminded how easy it can happen .

Resistance Women

great book, truth can never be overturned. As Hitler was, and we Must Remember it can happen again, as lies are pushed to believe.

Remarkable, well researched and engrossing

I found this book utterly captivating. The story methodically lays out the years before WW 2; I learned so much about this important historical period. I also found the story of these women so inspiring. One of the best fiction books I have read about this time. Highly, highly recommend!!!!
