About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author of Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker, an enthralling historical saga that recreates the danger, romance, and sacrifice of an era and brings to life one courageous, passionate American - Mildred Fish Harnack - and her circle of women friends who waged a clandestine battle against Hitler in Nazi Berlin.

After Wisconsin graduate student Mildred Fish marries brilliant German economist Arvid Harnack, she accompanies him to his German homeland, where a promising future awaits. In the thriving intellectual culture of 1930s Berlin, the newlyweds create a rich new life filled with love, friendships, and rewarding work - but the rise of a malevolent new political faction inexorably changes their fate.

As Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party wield violence and lies to seize power, Mildred, Arvid, and their friends resolve to resist. Mildred gathers intelligence for her American contacts, including Martha Dodd, the vivacious and very modern daughter of the US ambassador. Her German friends, aspiring author Greta Kuckoff and literature student Sara Weiss, risk their lives to collect information from journalists, military officers, and officials within the highest levels of the Nazi regime.

For years, Mildred’s network stealthily fights to bring down the Third Reich from within. But when Nazi radio operatives detect an errant Russian signal, the Harnack resistance cell is exposed, with fatal consequences.

Inspired by actual events, Resistance Women is an enthralling, unforgettable story of ordinary people determined to resist the rise of evil, sacrificing their own lives and liberty to fight injustice and defend the oppressed.

Compelling story

Truly enjoyed this novel on a few of the women who fought so bravely against the Nazis during WW 2. Based on true historical facts, the women, Greta, Martha and Mildred are depicted as dedicated, fearless women who fought along with their husbands, against the Hitler's reign of war and inhumanity. Itis a beautiful story of bravery which can only touch your heart as you read it.

Great story!

I followed the story addictively. The voices of the male characters were terrible— harsh and grating; I almost stopped because of that.

Incredibly informative and inspirational.

Wow. I’m so thankful to the author and narrators who brought this book into existence. I can honestly say that what I learned from reading this book changed my life. I have read countless books and studied many, many journals and research materials on WWI and WWII. Yet I didn’t know much about France’s revolutions or the story of Lafayette and the help he was to our country during the birth and construction of our nation during its inception. Furthermore it shocks and saddens me to know that after all that was sacrificed and accomplished, and at the cost of the millions of lives, with families shattered, all because of bigotry, hatred at the hands of the very worst of humanity-making it so even centuries later, we somehow allow world leaders whose pride and desire for dominance and power poisons souls into forgetting what real kings are meant to do for their people. Instead, people are dying because of selfishness and greed. We know it’ll be short lived. Because as in times past, brave men, women and children stand for truth and justice, giving their life to stop the tyranny. We can’t sit idly by. I was just so moved by this story. Thank you.

Important historical novel

I loved the story and most of the performance. It is an important book about ethics and personal courage, and how people got "used" to the slow encouraging of the atrocities of the third Reich. Just found it disappointing that many German words were mispronounced and barely understandable to me, a native German speaker.

Wow.... EYE OPENING!

Intelligent, strong, brave and endearing characters... fictional characters and real people woven together seamlessly! Sadly I admit I was completely unaware of the rise of Hitler and the Nazis! I see the WWII era through in a very different way and can't wait to read more!

Great story and outstanding narration

In the same vein as The Nightingale and The Tattooist of Auschwitz, this historical fiction work is based on the true story of two members of the anti-Nazi resistance in the years following Hitler’s ascendancy and into World War II. This compelling story is beautifully written and deftly narrated and brings you into the lives of these amazing “ordinary” women, who sacrificed it all during this critical time.
