Publisher's summary

Lawmen Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch must prevent all-out war between rival factions in the latest adventure in the New York Times best-selling series.

When gold is discovered in the foothills just outside of Appaloosa, it sets off a fight between two shrewd local business operations as their hired gun hands square off over the claim. First a young miner disappears, then another. And then one of the businessmen himself is killed, right on his front doorstep.

Meanwhile, as Cole and Hitch try to put a stop to the escalating violence, another killer is making his way toward town in pursuit of a long-lost dream and a mission of vengeance. Cole and Hitch will have their work cut out for them to keep the peace, especially when all these ruffians converge at the huge Appaloosa Days festival, where hundreds of innocent souls might get caught in the crossfire....

Critic reviews

"Knott ups his game with every entry he contributes to the Cole-Hitch series. The dialogue is sharper, the plotting more complex, and Knott is mastering Parker’s spare style. Very entertaining reading for western fans." (Booklist)

It's nice to hear writer's voice

but I didn't appreciate the foul language. Oh, that ending... Masterful. Clean up the potty mouth.

The last 2 Appaloosa books haven’t been as good as the first half of the series.

I was disappointed in the last book in this series and this one was just so-so as well. This series seems to be going downhill and that makes me sad because it started of so well. I understand that it’s not Robert B. Parker writing them anymore, so maybe that’s it.

Another Cole and Hitch Homerun!

Excellent writing combined with superb narration made this book a hard one to put down. Romance, suspense, and plenty of action show up as the characters come to life.

Buckskin

Story and writing was good and I think Knotts captured the essence and personalities of both Virgil and Everett. My main complaint is in the times the narrator said, he said, every other breath. Good narrators put enough acting in their voice to be able to tell one character from another. This would make the book, story line, and fluidity of the writing sound so much better!

Truly terrible reader

Barb
A lot has been said about the book itself, but I want to comment on the reader. I’m not an actor, but I swear I did a better job in freshman year oral interpretation class. These books aren’t cheap, and we have been seriously shortchanged by the quality of this recording. Titus Welliver, we need you.

Robert Knott is a brilliant writer

Hearing the story narrated by the author himself takes everything to a new level. Through this first hand narration we are awarded an insight that would otherwise not be possible. Mr. Knott’s academy award winning writing never disappoints. There is nothing he’s written I do not enjoy - and this certainly is a no exception. Martha Kathryn was a fascinating and marvelous character - my favorite! I hope to read about her in Mr. Knott’s future novels.

Keeping the peace can be a hard job.

I wished they made more of these novels into movies. Another great story. Keep them coming.

Disappointing

I have loved all the Cole and Hitch books until now. The new author has changed the characters and the way the stories were written by adding a lot of foul language and gruesome scenes. The narrator should not have been changed as he was perfect for the characters. Sometimes change is good... not this time!
