About this listen

From the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender comes a YA novel starring Avatar Kyoshi.

After years of searching for the next Avatar, the four nations have found peace with Avatar Yun - until Kyoshi, Yun’s friend and servant, demonstrates remarkable bending abilities herself. With the identity of the true Avatar at stake, Kyoshi and her fiery friend Rangi flee the Avatar mansion and find supporters in the daofei - outlaws living in the shadows of the Earth Kingdom. But while Kyoshi, Rangi, and their daofei friends face off against underworld rivals, those who seek to control the Avatar draw close.

This thrilling first installment maps Kyoshi’s journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice destined to become a legend in the world of Avatar.

A great Avatar story

Based on the preview I thought I wouldn't like it based solely on the narrator. I had swayed for a while before deciding "why not just give it a try to fall asleep to" and I ended up staying awake half the night because it was so good.

In general I don't like female narrators because I don't think they can voice men as well as a male narrator can voice women, and the preview gives the impression that the narration sounds robotic. At the start I did think her male voices were a little dopey, but later on they grew on me. Her narration of Lao Ge is excellent, as are Yun, Lek, and Jianzhu.

As the story progresses I can see exactly why they chose her, because her voice is less robotic and more grim I came to realize, and that fits the story’s tone perfectly.

As far as the story goes I think it's fantastic. Fans of the Avatar shows and comics will feel as home in this world, and will recognize names and places at once. However this is a much more adult take on Avatar's world. There is no profanity or sexual content, but there is violence and mature topics discussed in ways not suited for young children. So, parents of young Avatar fans, wait on this one.

I have always wondered what bending could be used for if it wasn't shown in a kid friendly way. This story has water benders impaling people, and earth benders decapitating their foes. In addition it shows the criminal underworld, corrupt politicians, and the darker side of daily life in the Avatar world. For fans of lore and exploration of fictional worlds this book will be a treat.

Amazing book!

I read a few of the reviews and I strongly disagree with some of the 1 star ratings. The performance by Wu was unmatched, the story line flowed so well, and there never seemed to be a plot point missing. Would recommend this book to Avatar fans as well as those who have never heard of the Avatar universe.

Page turner and a complex addition to the avatar series

This book really caught me. I didn’t want to put it down. It really took the world and stories of the avatar and moved them in an unexpected and rich direction. I would highly recommend this book for some delightful escapism and fantasy.

Great Backstory

gives some great backstory to the Avatar series but does fall into some stereotypical young adult tropes. if you're a fan of the series then it's definitely worth a pick up, just know that the plot is fairly predictable.

It's pretty good. Since this is supposed to longer the rest of this is unnecessary.
