About this listen

In the world's most celebrated and lyrical love story, the sublime devotion of two young lovers transcends their earthly fate.

The noble Veronese houses of Montague and Capulet are locked in a bitter feud. When Romeo (a Montague) and Juliet (a Capulet) fall in love, they are swept up in a series of violent events and cruel twists of fortune. Despite the passion and innocence of their love, they fall victim to the enmity between their families, and their story ends in tragedy.

In this production, Romeo is played by Joseph Fiennes and Juliet by Maria Miles. Elizabeth Spriggs is the Nurse.

Deeply emotional and yet intelligible

The parts are acted with enough intensity that you feel you are experiencing a performance, and yet it is always possible to make out the words—an essential clarity when one is not seeing the parts on stage.

Incredibly done. I plan on purchasing the rest of the Archangel series. Enjoyed it immensely.

Splendid

Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most heartbreaking plays: for me, it’s right up there with King Lear. Two innocent people are crushed by blind fate, and close to a half-dozen others are taken with them.

The Arkangel recording is, as most of them are, a superb production. The cast is uniformly excellent, but I took particular pleasure in David Tennant’s unhinged performance as Mercutio, and in the old favorites Trevor Peacock as Juliet’s father and Clive Swift as the disastrously well-intentioned Friar Lawrence. The sound design makes it easy to visualize the dusty streets of Verona and the rain-swept graveyard at the end.

Follows the Folger Shakespeare Library Translation

I use this audio version of the play because it follows the Folger Shakespeare Library translation of the play that we use in our high school English classrooms. I begin the unit with the audio so that students can attune themselves to the rhythm of the lines and to the pronunciation of the words. The actors, music, and sound effects are interesting and captivating, and the play is brought to life through this production.

5 star performance

The performance was one if the greatest I’ve been privileged to listen to. I will listen to all of the plays performed by Arkangle Shakespeare with great excitement.

awful

I have never had a book I just couldn't finish but this is one. I love the story of Romeo and Juliet but this version is just terrible, if I could have submitted this with zero stars I would have.
