About this listen

Thomas Merton, toward the end of his life, warned of a "pervasive form of contemporary violence" that is unique to our times: overwork and overactivity. In his work as a minister and caregiver, Wayne Muller observed the effects of this violence on our communities, our families, and our people. He responds to this escalating "war on our spirits" in this audio guide, and immerses listeners in the sacred tradition of the shabbat - the day of rest - a tradition that is all but forgotten in an age where consumption, speed, and productivity have become the most valued human commodities. He offers practices and exercises that reflect the sabbath as recognized in Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism. Through his way of nourishment and repose, Muller teaches, we welcome insights and blessings and arise only with stillness and time.©1999 Wayne Muller (P)1999 Wayne Muller Christian Living Christianity Holidays Judaism Spirituality Celebration

Great book to help you go from being a Sabbath Seeker to a Sabbath Keeper

Grateful for the Sabbath

This was the best book I have read in a long time. It was like it was written for me. I have been telling friends my life has become unbalanced, but I didn't do anything about it. Now I have been diagnosed with cancer and my too busy life has come to a screeching halt. In comes Wayne Muller, hit the nail on the head, has explained how to get back on track, and now I begin my journey of healing and balance through Sabbath. Thank you for giving me permission.

This book highlighted exactly what has gone wrong

Great real-life examples from history and modern day pointing to the benefits of proper Sabbath. Any longer and it might be overkill for some topics.

Reminder of the purpose to center

The beginning is great but bro get's it all wrong, The Sabbath is not the queen believers are the "Queen" and the Sabbath Bride. Then he does as unbelievers do and tells fables and stories based on men's futile imagination. It is the body of Messiah that is the bride, not the Sabbath which Heschel calls "The Bride." Of course this just exposes the arrogance of those who have no real genuine faith in Adonai (they neither believe Him or read the scriptures with understanding) but love and embrace the traditions of men.

Bro gets it wrong, believers are the "Queen" not..

I was expecting a Biblical account of the Sabbath. instead, Mr. Muller combines teachings of Jesus in the Bible with Buddhist teachings. Nope. No thank you. They contradict each other.

a bag of religions

This book was so much more than I expected. it was assigned reading for the leadership academy within my profession. Find your rhythm with rest before it is forced on you.

I recommend both listening and reading

Definitely to be listened slowly and to meditate upon everything Mueller writes. Amazing and spiritual! I love how he uses examples of all types of religion to convey rest. I do love his style this is my first book by him and wish he also did enough as an audible. Great listening voice.

It’s very beautiful and meditative book

There is some good material in this book. Enough for a sermon on the topic. The narration however is slow and quiet and frankly hard to pay attention to for any length of time without falling asleep.

Some good material

Wayne Mueller has captured the essence of Sabbath and given beautiful perspective on why it is so valuable and important. This book is one of my top five.

A masterpiece on Sabbath keeping!

Wayne has a wonderful cadence and poetic way that adds to the story.

I would highly recommend it to everyone
