Before she was the Duchess of Windsor, Bessie Wallis Warfield was Mrs. Wallis Spencer, wife of Earl “Win” Spencer, a US Navy aviator. From humble beginnings in Baltimore, she rose to marry a man who gave up his throne for her. But what made Wallis Spencer, Navy Wife, the woman who could become the Duchess of Windsor? The answers lie in her one-year sojourn in China. In her memoirs, Wallis described her time in China as her “Lotus Year,” referring to Homer’s Lotus Eaters, a group living in a state of dreamy forgetfulness, never to return home.

When Samuel Zemurray arrived in America in 1891, he was tall, gangly, and penniless. When he died in the grandest house in New Orleans sixty-nine years later, he was among the richest, most powerful men in the world. Working his way up from a roadside fruit peddler to conquering the United Fruit Company, Zemurray became a symbol of the best and worst of the United States: proof that America is the land of opportunity, but also a classic example of the corporate pirate who treats foreign nations as the backdrop for his adventures.

A timely investigation of the causes of technological and scientific stagnation, and a radical blueprint for accelerating innovation. From the Moon landing to the dawning of the atomic age, the decades prior to the 1970s were characterized by the routine invention of transformative technologies at breakneck speed. By comparison, ours is an age of stagnation. Median wage growth has slowed, inequality and income concentration are on the rise, and scientific research has become increasingly expensive and incremental.

When he was six years old, Roger Penrose discovered a sundial in a clearing near his house. Through that machine made of light, shadow, and time, Roger glimpsed a “world behind the world” of transcendently beautiful geometry. It spurred him on a journey to become one of the world’s most influential mathematicians, philosophers, and physicists. Penrose would prove the limitations of general relativity, set a new agenda for theoretical physics, and astound colleagues and admirers with the elegance and beauty of his discoveries.

Visit through the eyes of a passionate resident
Some travel guides are written by people with minimal actual knowledge of the location. This book is definitely not one of those. You can tell with each chapter that the author is not only passionate about her hometown of Santa Fe, but she also wants you to love your visit as much as she loves her city.
From chapters on the food vibe and best local restaurants to visit, to the bustling art scene, each chapter will guide you through a great visit. For me, the chapter about the unique neighborhood was both informative and really put the city into perspective about exactly where to visit during a stay to Santa Fe. Listen and learn from an expert; a passionate resident who will encourage your visit.

Go in person or through the pages!
This book is a gem for anyone looking to explore Santa Fe with a fresh and authentic perspective! Whether you’re a first-time visitor or someone who’s fallen in love with Santa Fe and keeps coming back, this guide takes your experience to the next level.
One of the the things I enjoyed most in this book was discovering the secret spots, like boutique cafes, rooftop views, and secluded art installs. These insider tips transform a visit from typical tourism into an “insider’s” adventure.
What really sets this book apart is its voice, it feels like you’re traveling with a friend through the city, sharing not only practical advice but also personal stories and intimate recommendations. It’s not just about sightseeing; it’s about connecting with the spirit of Santa Fe and its vibrant community. I truly recommend this book for anyone who wants to visit or even just get lost in their imagination of this special city.

So grateful to the author for providing a helpful guide because I travel on a budget. So, I really appreciate the inclusion of such things as budget pet-friendly accommodations and lower-cost diners. I am also glad to have been given clear guidance on which things are a waste of money and which scams to look out for. I wasn't sure I would make the side trip to Santa Fe, but this book decided me!
