About this listen

A boy of just six years old, Austin Roberts finds himself perpetually in the way at the post-funeral gathering of his great uncle Jack. Frustrated and alone, he wanders out onto the front porch to find his great uncle Cat, Jack's brother, sitting alone, an old album on his lap. Oblivious to the world around them, the two begin an unlikely conversation and together embark on a journey that stretches almost seven decades in length.

Page by page, Cat imparts the story of the album to young Austin, using a series of seemingly mundane and unconnected objects to tell the story of the brothers Roberts from long ago. Beginning with their humble upbringing by a single mother on the river bottoms of rural Ohio to the day they left home to serve in the Korean War, through their capture and escape from an unmarked prisoner of war camp and on through the lives they returned to, the album tells a story of bravery and brotherhood that knows no bounds.

This is a story about brothers in a forgotten time, a forgotten place and a forgotten war. There's no glory, no fanfare or tikertape parade just brothers watching out for each other. I loved the manner in which this story was told adding another layer to the story. The narrator was absolutely perfect and made you believe he was telling you the story. I couldn't put it down.

I'm still crying 10 minutes after finishing. I've read many of Dustin's books and this one was different. it was so moving and poignant, a tale of 2 brothers and their roles in the Korean War. if you know anyone that was ever in this war or have knowledge of it, you know many don't regale it and it's been dubbed the forgotten war. but as Cat says, if you were in it, you couldn't forget it.
I strongly urge a read. or listen. whatever you consider. I'm really glad that I did.

A beautiful story of love and the "forgotten" war
