Publisher's summary

On a calm night off the Florida coast, a fishing boat vanishes without a trace. Something deadly is hiding in US waters, and the Navy brass would rather bury the truth than face it.

It's Montgomery's war now. Brash and unconventional, Mike Montgomery is hardly regulation Navy. At his side, Diane Martinson, the Chief of Staff's wife - smart, tough...and his lover. Under his command, the USS Goldsborough - a World War II-era destroyer thundering toward a showdown of water and fire.

With the arrival of P. T. Deutermann-retired Navy captain, former arms control negotiator within the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and ex-commander of at destroyer squadron - today's naval thriller just climbed to a whole new level.

Florida coast Navy post WWII

When I first started listening to audiobooks many years ago I always tried to find books over 20 hours in length. I felt I was getting more for my money, better character development, etc. But I eventually migrated to the 10-12 hour range of book as that seemed the standard and there are lots of good stories at those lengths.

I would still listen to an occasional longer book, still enjoy them but before you purchase one you do think about the length are are you really ready for a longer book? The written reviews of this book were mixed even thought the overall rating was high, 4.6 as I type this. Many brought up the length, said the beginning was slow, you know, the normal stuff.

For me, I enjoyed the book from start to finish and the length never once bothered me. Most of the author's books are Navy tales from the Pacific in World War II but this one is different. It is post WWII with the location off the NE coast of Florida around the Jacksonville area. That setting and the timeframe were both really interesting since I'd never really thought about how the Navy would operate off the US coast during peace time.

I'm not a boat or Navy expert by any means. My dad was in the Navy in WWII and I did a tour in the army so the lingo and all of it are new to me and every book by the author I learn something new, I find them really interesting.

The summary tells you enough about the book, hopefully, this helps puts some perspective on it. Enjoy!!

Great Storyline

A very good book to listen to from start to finish! Some imagination is needed but anyone who served aboard a Submarine should enjoy this book.

Interesting premise, exciting story

I chose this book partly for it's length, partly for the subject. I found I liked the characters and how they were developed. I also discovered some details about ASW, Submarine duty and the behind the scenes politics of the military brass, some of which I was vaguely aware of, growing up in a military family that had three O6 and an O7 between dad, uncle, granddad and his brother.

Interesting but superfluous verbosity

I really enjoy the work of this author but was disappointed with the excess verbiage in this one. The editors should have cut at least 30% from the book. It became even worse in audiobook format. The romance section was quite juvenile for these particular protagonists. The details of ASW were interesting and the characters were developed. It was just too long for the actual material.

This was a very good story but I could only get a couple of chapters into it

The narrator killed it for me. I just cannot stand the monotone of his voice and his cadence made it hard for me to listen to. I just chalked it up to one of the few by this author that I could not listen to.

Engaging…

Great story with someone who should know about the Navy. Those of us who don’t wish that it was pure fiction, but have our doubts.
