Publisher's summary

A Warhammer Age of Sigmar Novel

The Varanguard are the elite warriors of the Everchosen, those worthy of fighting by Archaon's side. When treachery strikes, Vanik, one such warrior, will stop at nothing to bring Archaon's vengeance to his foes.

Listen to it because

It's a look inside the inner circle of Archaon Everchosen and his forces—a fascinating glimpse at the greatest champions of Chaos in the Mortal Realms.

The story

Archaon, the Everchosen, is the most powerful and feared of all the great Champions of the Dark Gods. Warlords of immense cruelty, who have waged innumerable campaigns of suffering and slaughter, thirst to fight by his side. Such Knights of Ruin are known as the Varanguard.

Though Vanik the Black Pilgrim’s blade drips with the blood of conquered empires, he is yet to prove himself worthy of ascension into the Fifth Circle of the Varanguard. At last, he faces his final quest: to hunt down and slay a legendary hero of Order that prophecies foretell will liberate the Mortal Realms from the stranglehold of Chaos. Yet when a betrayal strikes the very heart of the Varanspire, the great fortress of the Everchosen himself, it soon becomes clear to Vanik that Sigmar’s Chosen is not the only threat to Archaon’s reign that he must defeat. For Vanik, there will be only victory or oblivion. For he is a Varanguard, and no enemy of the Three Eyed King will escape his blade, lest the Varanspire fall.

A fun story

A very fun story, especially if you’re interested in the cities of Sigmar and the slaves to darkness.

A story that was well done

I expected a story about a powerful Tzeentchian champion of choas. Got more of a general varangard story. It’s an interesting listen but at times I feel it’s disjointed.

Great Read

I really enjoyed the book, yet took a break in between the two major plot parts. Exciting read and engaging, great for AOS & GW in general. Just not the best well rounded book in comparison to other genres and Authors. I highly recommend it as an AOS & 40K fan. I'm sad there's not more Chaos Undivided books similar to it :( Stormcast get too much love for being a bunch of punks.

Chaos as it should be.

The book does a wonderful job of detailing the horrors, wonders, contradictions and slight glimpses of hope in inherent to chaos in all of warhammers incarnations. The main character is extremely likeable, it is very easy to believe and see how he has come so far in the service of the dark gods. The company he keeps, friendly, enemy and that in between space inherent to much of chaos's followers are all written, voiced and done well all around.

Obviously i know that these are the bad guys and that unlike in 40k fantasy and age of sigmar can be said to have good guys, though the grim dark foundation they stand upon still stains them. But with that said, i was rooting for them to win every step of the way, for the main character to pass every stumble, hurdle and leap set in his way to meet his goals. The writer does an excellent job of keeping things at a good pace while keeping you thoroughly invested in the story and where it is going.

The voice actor/narrator was good however there were one or two voices i simply did not like. Is that due to me or maybe there were too many characters who sounded a little too similar? Regardless he does elevate the book to place it needs to be and keeps you invested along with the writing.

I recommend the book for those looking for a chaotic tale that reminds me of older warhammer fantasy chaos based books. Well done to all involved!

Great book

Always fun to read stories narrated from the "baddies" point of view and this one hits it perfectly. More books like this please!

This audiobook is like listening to Death Metal

Who knew an aspiring Chaos Lord could be so brutal and still be a patient dad. This book honors the Undivided way so well
