Publisher's summary

A shocking novel of greed, deception, and murder among the Gold Coast elite who can afford anything - even the darkest of desires. Dan Shaw hopes to be a lawyer someday - if he can only stay out of prison long enough to pass the bar. Neither is likely when he agrees to help hotshot Florida attorney Thomas Petrie track down a slick con man who’s swindled a consortium of well-to-do Paradise Key clients out of $22 million. But the charismatic Victor Trebuchet and his sexy partner in crime are a lot more dangerous than anyone imagined. And the silken counter-sting set up in an Italian villa to snare the couple may end up trapping Shaw instead. With that much money on the line, anyone is liable to betray anyone. But in the meantime, Shaw’s living the high life and he’s in way over his head. Soon he may find himself doing hard time - or worse - in a watery grave at the bottom of Bell Harbor.

Ron Faust is the author of 14 previous thrillers. He has been praised for his "rare and remarkable talent" (Los Angeles Times), and several of his books have been optioned for films. Before he began writing, he played professional baseball and worked at newspapers in Colorado Springs, San Diego, and Key West.

Critic reviews

“Faust tells a thrilling story in lean, tight noir prose… The mystery of the flawed, complex Shaw and his past, duly unraveled by the end, adds another layer of excitement.” (Publishers Weekly)

Easy listening

A very good story. The narrator is easy to listen to and is very engaging EXCEPT for the occasional mispronounced word. The frustrating thing is that they are all easy words. There aren’t many so if you can just let them go by you will enjoy several hours.

but slow from start to middle.

took too much time to set up the story for my liking. I enjoyed the climax of the novel but honestly feel like I could have skipped the first 6 hours and not missed too much, besides some comedy and character building but hardly necessary for the end.

I hate cheaters

was it necessary to make Dan a cheater, I was disgusted that he allowed Samatha to call him lover, kiss him and then later allow her to join him in Italy when he would not let his girlfriend.....I skipped to the end, it ruined the story for me. Male authors do this more than female authors.....why?????

Keep facts straight

I’ll start off that I like Dan Shaw and this can become a great multi-book series. That is IF the author can keep the facts straight from book to book. How many years did Shaw serve in the CID, 10 or 12? It was presented as 12 in this book, 10 in the first. How old was Flaconer when he was to receive his inheritance, 30 or 13? This second guffaw raised some writing credibility issues with the second book. These are but two examples I noticed in differences in facts between the first two books (another is a spoiler, so I won’t mention it). I love multi-book series where the characters really develop, but with these editorial errors, I can’t say I’ll be clamoring for another Dan Shaw book.

Narrator is fantastic, though. So props to him.

Interesting story

I like the story. narrator pronounced a few words in a way I did not recognize. Like veranda, brooch and another one I can't remember. Otherwise it was good.

good mystery twist

while this book continues where the other left off regarding the characters there is a rwist that impacts the maun character both in his relationship and his devious nature surfaces. lots more decription of food which while interesting really doesn't add to the story

Unless you like history, this not a book for you.

I just had to turn this book off. I couldn't take it any more. Unless you really know history. This book makes no scenes. Let's start, Etruscans, medieval weapons, Ty Cobb, Ponzi schemes, and Elisabeth 1. So much more references you wont know. This author lovers WW 11,the rosenbergs, lindbergh baby, and other thing before form 1930. This is not a book for you. Also, you need to know things about european countries and customs. Fortunately, I do know what he is talking about. This is years of reading history. Cerberus, Do you know who is. all I have to say.

Excellent

IMHO Far more intriguing than Oceans 10,11, etc. Hotter than James Bond!! Really a fun, mesmerizing read. Dan Shaw has it all.
