About this listen

Stripped of his memories and trapped in the year 2044, Chris Nost must unravel the mystery surrounding his own murder. If he doesn't, history is at risk of unravelling around him. Weaving through history, rogue time agents, history thieves, gods, and the Time Corps are all trying to alter the paradox Chris finds himself wrapped up in, and each of them is making it worse. Will history shatter? Will the human race be saved? Will Chris manage to save his own life 41 years after it was stolen from him?

An Impressive, If Convoluted Time Travel Story.

Any additional comments?

Second Paradigm is an interesting time travel story that you may find hard to follow if you’re the kind of person who listens to audio books while multi tasking. The basic story is that a scientist convicted of murder, in a future time period, is somehow connected to a time paradox that time agents, (the equivalent of what I would describe as military time police), are trying to fix in another, farther into the future time period. The story moves back and forth through several time periods while unfolding and offers some really cool theories on the nature of time an its perceived laws. It also gives the reader/listener some quantum physics to chew on as well. I personally have no idea if any of the science in the story is based on any real life scientific theories, but I can attest to how the science in the story feels. Author Peter J. Wacks definitely makes the reader/listener feel like the information given in his novel is based on real science and or scientific theory. All of which make it a bit difficult to do too much multi tasking while listening to his novel. If you’re like me, you’re going to find yourself going back to listen to certain passages again because you feel like you missed something.

I wasn’t familiar with the work of author Peter J. Wacks before this story. Now that I’ve read/listened to “Second Paradigm.” I’ll definitely be on the look out for more by him. As for the novel “Second Paradigm,” if having to give your full attention to a good science fiction story doesn’t put you off from listening to it, then I think you’ll find it an excellent choice for you credit.

Also, in addition to the story, the narrator, Zachary Johnson, was an excellent pairing with this book. I completely enjoyed his performance and his voice.

What a ride!!!

A very enjoyable book I'll be at not for the Leyman. Chock full of theory and technical explanation. This is one of those books you need a quiet room with no distractions. Miss 20 seconds and you find yourself repeating full chapters. Original and very enjoyable. Good story and performance

Any additional comments?

Being my first time travel book, I was struggling to keep up at times, especially near the end. I put no fault on the author or the performer, but the fact that I was listening while driving. I would enjoy a second listen through while really focusing in on the plot.

Interesting time travel mystery

If you could sum up Second Paradigm in three words, what would they be?

unique, developed, ...

What other book might you compare Second Paradigm to and why?

not comparable to any particular work I can think of recently, subject wise.

What does Zachary Johnson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I like this voice actor. Very clear reading voice. Not breathy. And does add dramatization but not over the top. Uniqueness to each character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It kept my attention both by the reading and content

Best Time Travel Book in a While

Where does Second Paradigm rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I listen to a lot of books, more than a hundred every year and so far this year this is my favorit.

Have you listened to any of Zachary Johnson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first Zachary Johnson narration, I look forward to more by him. He really brought the character to life.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I really like this book but it would not make a good movie. I feel like just to much goes on. Although it would make a great TV show!

Any additional comments?

I am not sure if it was my Audible app or the book but there were several places (5 or 10) where line were repeated and followed by a slap sound.

Hard to keep up with!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The sequence of events gets confusing.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I don't know how to change the story from jumping from year to year.

What about Zachary Johnson’s performance did you like?

He did a great job keeping each characters tones the same throughout the story.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes I'd give it a try.

Mind Bending Brilliance

Had a grin on my face for most of the read. This is one of the best time travel novels in existence.

Interesting time travel book

I received this book for free for an unbiased and honest review

Don't even for a second take your attention away from this book because you will be lost forever or continually have to press the rewind button a lot like I did. I tried listening to the book when cooking and if my mind wandered once I had to pause and rewind. That's a good thing though because this book was so good I did not want to miss any of the parts that I would have missed. I guess I am so used to laid back straight forward books that this one made me think and I'm not used to that. Anyway, it is a very interesting book with time travel and mystery, I would most definitely listen to another book from this narrator and I would read another book from this author.
I usually like to go through and give a little synopsis of the story but I honestly don't think I can shave it down to a little synopsis. Just know it is a good book and I would recommend this to anyone who likes this genre.

Happy Reading/Listening!!!

Great Take on a Savior of Mankind

Time is not linear, but circular. This book had a very disconnected feel for me until about halfway through the story. It felt like a retelling of the same events over and over from different characters' points of view. If you can get through that, the rest of the story is an interesting take on how humanity will be saved after a paradox is created by the inventor of time travel.

Zachary Johnson did a good job with the narration and has a pleasant tone to his voice. The only slight negative about the recording is that multiple times during the story sentences were repeated. This took me out of the story every time it happened.
