About this listen

The stars speak in a language of secrets, yet their stories cannot remain hidden forever.

Billions of years ago, on one of the first-ever Earths, a boy named Skylar will walk away from his home for the last time. Beset by dreams where he flies through the early universe as a sentient starship, he will never be safe if his secret gets out. His only chance to stay alive is to fall in with the same knights who destroyed his peasant village and live under the shadow of the king who sent them to exterminate Skylar’s people.

But powerful dreams have a way of shaping reality, and with each midnight flight across the cosmos, Skylar finds his world—and himself—changing. Magic is another thing which should only exist in dreams, yet Skylar has it—one more secret that needs keeping.

Against a waking life full of monsters, warriors, swords, sorcery, treasure, and ancient mysteries, Skylar has only one key for putting all the pieces together: the Secret Sky that haunts his sleeping mind.

Imagination Gone Wild

Secret Sky: The Young Universe by T. Alan Horne is a spellbinding tale of imagery and sci-fi that any child would want to hear. Skylar lived on ancient Earth, but when the Knights killed his parents as their King commanded, Skylar began his dreams as a starship, taking his knowledge from the stars. He later ends up living with these Knights as their brother. The author and narrator did a fantastic job with this story. I kept wanting to know what would happen next. My imagination was going wild as if I were there. I saw Earth from a different perspective; I believed that the stars had that kind of power to guide Skylar. I felt he went through many emotions, but the secret sky in his dreams kept him and helped him. The story had so many enjoyable twists. I loved every minute of it. The audiobook is excellent for children, but I must be a child at heart because I loved it.

Great Read for Adults as well

Engaging Story, unique ideas with lots of quotable lines. The narrator was also a character in the story so the audio book narrator needed to be engaged in the story as well. Andrew Eiden did a superb job. The subtile humor came through because the narrator seemed to be enjoying the book as much as the reader!

My 7 year old and 5 year old boys also loved it, especially the dream sequences. Still waiting for the promised frozen yogurt from the author!

Magical universe for children

My kid loved this book! He couldn't put it down and it made me want to listen to it as well. My son told me to look up for other books by this author and to buy him this book in a paper version as well. One Christmas present to go!

A Great Mix of Genres and a Fun Ride!

This book really surprised me in the best way. It’s like nothing I’ve ever read before, blending sci-fi and fantasy in a way that feels fresh and exciting.

The story follows Skylar, a young boy who lives on an ancient Earth, but his dreams take him far beyond his small village, all the way into space. He dreams of becoming a sentient starship, and even though his magic is a secret, it might be the only thing that can keep him safe from the knights who destroyed his family.

The first thing that grabbed me was the world-building. The mix of medieval life with futuristic starships and magic feels so unique. I loved the cosmic mystery of it all, especially how the stars themselves seem to be watching over everything.

With regards to the audiobook, the narration really brought this story to life. It’s engaging and full of energy, which makes all the difference when you're dealing with a story this imaginative. The narrator’s voice feels like part of the story, adding a layer of fun that makes you want to keep going.

You have to give this book a try. The way it mixes magic with space travel is a fun, new twist on the genres you love.

Open your imagination

A good Harry Potter-type book, a good alternative if you run out of stuff to read. The mind craves knowledge and creativity.
