About this listen
Sheltered from the post-apocalyptic world in a secluded river valley, 13-year-old Kima (pronounced “Kee-ma”) Rand is compelled to leave the safety of her farming community when it becomes clear that radioactive fallout has destroyed the valley’s crops.
Accompanied by a small band of young people and her mentor, an aged former National Guardsman, Kima must travel through a thousand miles of wasteland on a quest to locate the National Seed Depository - an old world fortress rumored to house enough frozen seeds to allow the valley to fend off starvation. To reach the seed depository, Kima must first battle zombies, mutant animals, man-eating plants, and the hostile remains of a world that, for her, defies understanding. Along the way, she repairs old relationships and forges new ones while discovering hidden strengths in herself and an elusive life’s purpose.

Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

Once again, one man finds himself once thrust into the forefront of a war he wants nothing to do with and seemingly cannot win.

Twenty-two years old Cole Morgan struggled after a career ending football injury and then the tragic loss of his parents in the winter of 1937. He felt like a man with no destination... running from lost opportunities and memories better left alone. The Superpox-99 virus has wiped out nearly the entire human race. Governments have collapsed. Cities have become graveyards filled with unspeakable horror. People have resorted to scavenging from the dead, or taking from the living. The entire industrialized world has become a wasteland of abandoned cars, decaying bodies, and feral animals. To stay alive, U.S. Deputy Marshal Mason Raines must forage for food, water, and gasoline while outgunning those who seek to take advantage of the apocalyptic anarchy. Together with his giant Irish wolfhound, Bowie, he aligns with survivors of the town of Boone in a life and death struggle against a gang of violent criminals. With each deadly encounter, Mason is force to accept his place as one of the nation's few remaining lawmen. In a world now populated by escaped convicts, paranoid mutants, and government hit squads, his only hope to save the townspeople is to enforce his own brand of frontier justice.

Story
Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

It's Peretti's ultimate monster story. And this time, the monster is real. Miles away from the hectic city, Reed and Rebecca hike into the beautiful Northwestern woods. They're surrounded by gorgeous mountains, waterfalls, and hundreds of acres of unspoiled wilderness. But something - or someone - begins closing in on them. Something no human has ever seen. And it's killing everyone in its path without remorse.

A Wonderful Narrator
I cannot wait to listen to the next book! I seemed to fly through the first one and that praise belongs to Bridget Poor, who absolutely entertained and engaged me while I was listening. Would and will listen again.

Zombies, mutants, and thrills
I greatly enjoyed this story, I am eagerly awaiting the next book. Kima is a no nonsense young woman with a purpose and nothing will stop her. Mutants, zombies, and distance are challenges she faces and overcome. This book was very well written and I was often on the edge of my seat to see what Kima would face next and overcome.
