About this listen

The Navajo tribe, the Diné, are the largest tribe in the United States and live across the American Southwest. But over a century ago, they were nearly wiped out by the Long Walk, a forced removal of most of the Diné people to a military-controlled reservation in New Mexico. The summer of 2018 marked the 150th anniversary of the Navajo's return to their homelands. One Navajo family and their community decided to honor that return. Edison Eskeets and his family organized a ceremonial run from Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in order to deliver a message and to honor the survivors of the Long Walk.

Both exhilarating and punishing, Send a Runner tells the story of a Navajo family using the power of running to honor their ancestors and the power of history to explain why the Long Walk happened. From these forces, they might also seek the vision of how the Diné - their people - will have a future.

Jim Kristofic is a master class storyteller. He does a wonderful job of narrating his own book. His familiarity with the Navajo people, and even able to speak some Navajo add to the authenticity of this book I worked as a Stradivarius on the Navajo, reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico, in 2012, some of the stories of the awful things that were done, the Navajo people caught by the Spaniards, the Mexicans, and eventually the latest states army Williams, a very tragic and sad tale that is worth introspection

Humbling and tragic tale

Expertly researched story of The Long Walk. Heartbreaking tale of our not so recent history.

Great historical story of the Navajo coupled with a contemporary Navajo runner honoring the long walk.

Very educational … I appreciate all aspects of this book … I never know what to expect, so I don’t expect anything really … personal thing for me … It’s humbling when someone shares very personal information such as was done here … Thank you … and again, it’s not hard to visualize all of the beauty and tragedy … I believe that can only come from a connection with the land and the past. Also the humor … including about Jim Belushi … seriously had me laughing out loud with my headphones on while walking & RUNNING … on to my next book by Mr Kristofic. Thank you, Mr Eskeets.

Hard to top his affinity for life telling …

this is a masterfully told Tale about a people they have suffered much. is it has been my privilege to live on the Navajo Nation for 25 years. Edison is tremendous man and one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I appreciate the craftsmanship that Jim Kristofic has and weaving that blends past present and future. If anyone wants to have a greater understanding of the Navajo people, this is an essential book to help it that.

A brilliant story that needed to be told

this book was definitely not what I was expecting. I do love the mixture of past and present

a mixture of present and past.

This is a masterful tale of the past and the present. Even with the sadness and hardships of The Long Walk, there are moments of wry humor to make the story memorable.
Mr. Kristofic does a tremendous job with the narration, too. A pleasant voice with such clarity. Fantastic.
Congratulations to both Mr. Eskeets and Mr. Kristofic for creating such a wonderful book.

Wow! What a great book
