Publisher's summary

In The Sign of Four, the great detective, Sherlock Holmes, famously says: "... when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth ...".

Eliminate the Impossible collects six canonical tales in which Holmes and Watson encounter mummies, angels, phantoms, invisible assassins, and arcane machines ... or so it might appear to those without a carefully stocked brain attic.

From Medieval London, to the snow-capped mountains Turkey, from dusty Admiralty vaults, to the glitz and glamour of the Orient Express, from the days of fledgling friendship, to the backdrop of World War I, this new collection invites you to celebrate deduction, forensic science, and logic ... and Eliminate the Impossible.

Holmes Versus the Supernatural?

It's quite popular these days to set Sherlock Holmes up against the supernatural and force him to concede that Cthulhu, or vampires, or whatever, does actually exist. That is what I thought I was getting in this great collection of Holmes short stories. Instead, what I found was a half dozen tales in which the circumstances surely would lead Holmes to think the supernatural was involved, but in which Holmes doesn't blink. He stays true to himself and uncovers the mystery. And I really liked that, even though I also enjoy the stories where he is forced to confront the supernatural as a real thing.

The author also takes the time at the end of each story to inform the reader of the nineteenth century history that is the basis of each tale, grounding Holmes' activities in the people, events, and understanding of his time. It was a nice additional touch.

Solid stories well told

These were interesting mysteries nicely told in Watson's familiar voice, with nothing that felt out of place, anachronistic, or out of character. Exactly the kinds of Holmes stories I like best! Well worth a listen.

Highly Entertaining!

As a child I would have my parents check out Sherlock Holmes records from the library which I would listen to time and again. In listening to Sherlock Holmes: Eliminate the Impossible I am taken back to those memories of classic stories being narrated as my mind fills in the images. These new tales have the feeling of the old. They do not try to take Holmes and Watson out of their period, though the tales cover a good period of time. I particularly like the notes at the end of each of the tales, which added so much additional depth and color. If you are a Holmes fan, or just a fan of good storytelling, I would very much recommend Sherlock Holmes: Eliminate the Impossible, and if you are like me, you might find yourself sitting in a parking lot for 15 plus minutes, waiting for the story you are listening to to finish, before you get out of the car.

Impossible to pass up

Sherlock Holmes: Eliminate the Impossible, penned by the talented Paula Hammond and brought to life through the impeccable narration of Michael Langan, is a literary treasure trove that transports listeners into the enigmatic world of the iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes, and his unwavering companion, Dr. John Watson.

In a literary landscape where it's fashionable to pit Holmes against the supernatural, Hammond's collection takes a refreshing turn. Rather than succumbing to the allure of ghosts, vampires, or otherworldly beings, Holmes remains steadfast in his commitment to logic and reason. What emerges from this anthology are six riveting tales where the specter of the supernatural looms large, yet Holmes's resolve remains unshaken. It's a testament to Hammond's skillful storytelling that she keeps Holmes firmly grounded in the realm of deductive reasoning, even amidst the most fantastical circumstances.

One of the standout features of Sherlock Holmes: Eliminate the Impossible is Hammond's meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy. Spanning diverse locales—from the bustling streets of Medieval London to the snow-clad mountains of Turkey—each story is steeped in rich, immersive settings that transport listeners back in time. Hammond's deep understanding of the geographies, institutions, and customs of the era imbues the narratives with an authentic sense of place, adding layers of depth to Holmes's investigations.

Moreover, Hammond's writing is masterful in suspense and intrigue. With each turn of the page, listeners are drawn deeper into a web of mystery and deception, eagerly unraveling clues alongside the brilliant detective himself. What sets Hammond's collection apart is not just the ingenious puzzles Holmes must solve, but the intricate character dynamics and nuanced relationships that unfold between Holmes and Watson. Their camaraderie and mutual respect form the beating heart of these tales, grounding the narrative in themes of friendship, loyalty, and unwavering resolve.

Of course, no review of Sherlock Holmes: Eliminate the Impossible would be complete without praising Michael Langan's exceptional narration. Langan's voice brings each character to life with remarkable clarity and depth, effortlessly capturing the essence of Holmes's sharp intellect and Watson's steadfast loyalty. His nuanced delivery infuses every scene with palpable tension and emotion, keeping listeners on the edge of their seats until the very last word.

In addition to the gripping narratives, Hammond's inclusion of explanations at the end of each story adds an extra layer of depth, allowing listeners to delve into the inner workings of Holmes's deductive process. It's a thoughtful touch that enriches the listening experience, providing insights into the mind of one of literature's most beloved detectives.

Sherlock Holmes: Eliminate the Impossible is a triumph of storytelling—a captivating journey through the hallowed halls of Victorian mystery and intrigue. With its compelling narratives, meticulous attention to detail, and outstanding narration, this collection is a true delight for fans of Sherlock Holmes and aficionados of the mystery genre alike. Hammond's homage to Conan Doyle's timeless creation is nothing short of extraordinary, leaving listeners eagerly awaiting the next installment in Holmes's enduring legacy.
