About this listen
Shona Jackson is a stranger in town. Would YOU let her stay in your home?
Everyone has a secret. Hers could get her killed...
Mississippi, 1956. Shona Jackson knows two things - how to repair car engines and that her dark childhood secret must stay buried. On the run from Louisiana, she finds shelter from an unjust world in the home of a kindly old lady and a job as a mechanic. But a woman working a man’s job can’t avoid notice in a small town. And attention is dangerous, especially when it comes from one woman in particular....
Free-spirited Lucy is new in town too. At 21 years old she is only now starting college. But her heart is just not in it, and when she meets Shona, something inside her begins to stir. The only thing standing in her way is Frank.
Frank’s life is a mess. Three years after the Korean War, his father still writes but hasn’t come home. His bar business is in danger, and he’s desperate for cash. And everyone he knows is stockpiling the sins of his past against him.
When Frank brings a raucous fair to town to stay afloat, Shona fears the added attention will shine a light on her past. If the truth comes out about her, she’ll lose everything - maybe even her life.
Can Shona outrun the perils that threaten her, and finally settle down?
Or will her new, unexpected friendship with Lucy attract a different kind of danger?
Captivating from the first minute, Shona is the first unforgettable novel in a mesmerizing, heart-wrenching historical fiction trilogy. If you like small-town secrets, courageous heroines with turbulent pasts, and remarkable women overcoming impossible odds, then you’ll be enthralled by Vicky Jones and Claire Hackney’s beautifully written and tear-jerking tale of desperate lives.
For fans of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, The Color Purple and The Help - listen to Shona now.

Twenty years ago in the dead of night, four seemingly random individuals pulled the ultimate heist and almost walked away with half a million dollars. But by daybreak, their plan had been shot to hell. One of them was in the hospital. One was in jail. One was dead. And one got away with it. There is nothing I hate more than when some big-city outsider stirs trouble in my peaceful little town. When Mr. Arrogance himself waltzes in and thinks he can slap a price tag on my land, he doesn’t know what he has coming. I’m not just a hick cowboy who’s going to bend to his good looks and charmless personality. No, sir. I don’t care how smart he looks in his fancy suits, all he cares about is money. I just wish I’d known who he was before I kissed him.

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Story
Tristan Mulligan knows how to get under my skin. He says this is his town and that I don’t belong. He says I’ll get eaten alive here. He’s arrogant and condescending and insanely sexy. He’s also a criminal. I knew better than to start something with him. I did it anyway. Tristan might shatter my heart. He might destroy my future. And there's something dangerously explosive about the way we are together. You can warn me about him all you want.

What an amazing glimpse into the past
I really enjoyed the 1950s world the authors built. The insights into social norms of the time and the small town relationships was very insightful. There was such an incoInnocence to the time but such corruption to and the authors did an amazing job of weaving those storylines I am building out the characters and what they had to struggle through to find their happiness.
The narrator did a good job with her performance and added to my enjoyment of the book.

A journey you want to be a part of..
Shona Jackson is a strong and honest woman whose story will touch you on deeper levels. She is determined to move on from her traumatized past and build an honest life for her. This book is heart warming as much as it is heart breaking. NExt I'm going to listen to 'Meet Me at 10' to know what happened in Shona's life after this chapter in her life.
I highly recommend listening to Shona's story and supporting the amazing authors.
Narration: I loved Barbara Henslee' voice, her accent and the narration. She read very clearly and added appropriate expressions.

Small town in the 50's.
I was gifted an Audible version of this book from Story Origin. This is my voluntary review.
A full length novel prequel introducing Shona. A girl running from her past. 1950 small town prejudices. Sticky subjects. Women,LGBDQ, poverty, race. Very well told. Lots of feels.
The narration was easy to understand and contributed to my enjoyment.
