Publisher's summary

The basis for the blockbuster motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Shutter Island by New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane is a gripping and atmospheric psychological thriller where nothing is quite what it seems. The New York Times calls Shutter Island, “Startlingly original.” The Washington Post raves, “Brilliantly conceived and executed.”

A masterwork of suspense and surprise from the author of Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone, Shutter Island carries the listener into a nightmare world of madness, mind control, and CIA Cold War paranoia and is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.

solid - but dated

I first read this book when it was initially released and really enjoyed it. When I saw it available on Audible I decided to listen this second time around. It was still a good premise, just really dated. Its funny how you don't really realize how "PC" the world has become until you listen to something like this and recall what you used to hear on a daily basis and never thought twice about it. Ditto on the opinions regarding mental health and women's roles. The narrator was not my favorite either. I guess sometimes it is just best to recall a book fondly, but not revisit it.

Better than the movie...

I've recently realized that more than a few of Dennis Lehane's books have been made into films, unlike Stephen King though they are ALL great films. I saw this movie before I read the book,. although in the case of Live By Night I read the book first and even though it was an illreceived film I liked it maybe only because I loved the book, that says something but Idk what just now...lol Anyways, this was a great thriller/mystery and the twists just keep coming throughout. The narrator was exquisite, one of the best I've EVER heard. I recommend this title to anyone who like any sort of novel, everyone would enjoy this I'm sure and without reading any reviews yet either...lol

Good Story

I liked this book but, to be honest, it was a little boring in parts. The overall story was really good though.

The narrator is great

The book was fun. Nothing spectacular, but still a good time.

The narrator, however, is fantastic. Every voice, male or female, sounded distinct and believable - pretty much perfect.

Twists and Turns

if you are a Lehane fan, check it out! Staged in the past but still near Boston and New England. Makes you feel like you might know some of the characters.

What a Page Turner!

This book was a pleasant surprise. It grabbed me almost immediately and did not let go. I'd not seen the movie, so all the twists were completely unexpected. I highly recommend it...

As always,

...better than any movie adaptation could ever hope to be. Great; worthy of a second and third read.

Saw the movie first. Still a solid story.

Solid story. Enjoyed it. Leaves you wondering at the end. The narration was good but lacked correct emotion at times.

Interesting

First, it's a brilliant idea. But the execution seemed to be missing something. I wasn't enthralled and I did see a lot of the twists coming.

But here's what is interesting. I'm not sure if I liked it or not. Seriously.

So, 3 stars. I would not discourage anyone from buying this book. Nor would I try to talk you into buying it.

It is amusing. And sometimes, that's enough. Right?
