About this listen

A father who doesn’t trust easily. A feisty educator with her eyes on the prize. Have they found forever with each other?

Chicago. Ezekiel Edmonds relishes silence. Wounded from his days in foster care and now a single dad to a deaf little girl, the talented mechanic prefers spending time with cars instead of people. But when he meets his child’s lovely new teacher, his emotional defenses run out of gas.

Cheyenne Simmons is passionate about helping the hearing-impaired. Determined to win a grant to start her own school, the fierce deaf instructor is unprepared when a student’s shy father disarms her with his kindness. And as the two discover they have a lot in common, she begins to see a future that includes the handsome mechanic.

Unable to afford expensive cochlear implants for his daughter, Ezekiel is dismayed to learn the person who can help him gain a substantial discount is competing for funding with his new love. And when Cheyenne realizes the man she’s falling for is standing in the way of her dreams, she fears she’s trading one heartache for another.

Can this quiet couple choose the right side of happily ever after?

Great

This was better than I expected. Of course the narrator was excellent but so was the story. My first listen by this author.

GREAT Narrator For an OK Story

While I appreciate the subject matter and learning more about the deaf community, aside from that, this story felt disjointed at times and didn't hit the intended mark at others. There were some moments that I felt like I could get sucked into these characters and their storyline, but it quickly passed each time. Ezekiel seemed like he needed counseling more than he needed anything else and while I am not against love moving quickly - for these characters it seemed all wrong.

Good story, okay romance

It was a good story, but I wasn't really moved by this couple's romance until the last third of the book. This book held my interest with a very real debate about the use of cochlear implants verses deaf culture. Cheyanne and Ezekiel are brought together by his deaf five-year old, who he feels would benefit from hearing with a cochlear implant. However, Cheyanne sees the device only as a waste of money for a trait that, she feels, doesn't need to be "corrected". Both of them are facing opposition from their over-the-top aggressive rivals with Ezekiel's abusive boss and Cheyanne's conniving grant money competitor. Ezekiel seems to be the most reasonable main character in this book. Although the book provided some insight into why Cheyanne is the way that she is, her character was too insecure and moody for me to find myself caring about this coupling. With that said, I did find the ending to be very satisfying and sweet.
