About this listen

Driven from his family when his sexuality is exposed, Jonah discovers drama, passion and intrigue in a traveling carnival - and in the enigmatic owner, Rafe Grimstone. The preacher's son and the lord who's rejected his former life in England feel the heat of attraction from the moment they meet.

Open-hearted Jonah is willing to risk hellfire and damnation for brief moments of pleasure with Rafe, but the older man is frozen in a past he can't escape, no matter how far he runs. As Rafe struggles to choose between responsibilities of his present and his past, mysterious accidents assail the close-knit carnival community. Will the perpetrator be revealed before the traveling show is ruined? And will Rafe finally reveal his true self to Jonah or continue to mask his identity like the changing images in a house of mirrors?

First, the story line was excellent and creative. I've read Bonnie Dee's stuff before and was hoping she didn't let me down. She didn't. I loved the story. It was well-written, the heat and sexual tension was perfect throughout, and just the right amount of sex. The problem was that after all that build-up and Jonah promising to show Rafe the next step in the wonders of physical intimacy, what we got after them spending weeks and weeks apart was "here we go, it's about to happen...fade to black."

This seems to be a common thing in m/m romance and it's extremely frustrating, which is too bad, because the rest of the story was so good.

Having said that, the narration was absolutely glorious. It took me a few minutes to get accustomed to Furlong's phrasing and pacing, but once I did, it was wonderful. I will definitely check out other books he narrates, now.

Almost perfect, but just misses

I enjoyed the book but thought there was too much sex...boring sex. Found myself fast forwarding through those scenes. Plus, I felt the ending was rushed. Regarding, still recommend.

Good story but...

I would have liked to see more character development. Also a glimpse at life in the new world, er old world they return to. Or a part 2!

Good historical love story

When I was younger I saw a movie with much the same carnival plot except it was a circus. But it didn’t take away from this story. I liked it.

I didn't know what I was getting into when I picked up this title. It has everything you would want in a story, excellent characters, amazing dialouge, character development, and an amazing story. I love this book, and the narrator did the book so much justice. Made the experience so much better.

Absolutely amazing

An enjoyable story with some fun plot twists and interesting characters. The actor is amazingly talented at creating audibly congruent characters.

Fun romance retro.

when i was listening i thought it was just going to be one of those poorly written romance books, but i was WRONG. while a little unconventional when it cones to the circus, its sweet and heartwarming to see their romance bloom into a loving relationship. 10/10.

LOVED IT

What a UNIQUE story!! ❤️❤️This historical set at the turn of the century plunks you in the midst of a traveling carnaval troupe.

A beaten young man, Jonah, is taken in by the carnaval’s mysterious owner, Rafe. Yes, the two end up together, but it’s a rough road to an HEA with a lot of pulling away on Rafe’s part.

What I loved most about this story was the setting and how well the secondary characters were integrated into the story. They helped to create an fantastic mood and each and everyone of them was interesting!

There is a mystery here—one that sabotages the traveling show and their financial prospects. Another muster is Rafe and his cloudy background, which he refuses to share with Jonah.

I also loved how bossy Jonah was sexually with his “boss.” And despite the religious sounding title, the preacher’s son does NOT angst over his sexuality for more than a few scenes at the beginning of the story.

The HEA is rather odd, but this was an odd cast of characters, so it fits!

I listened to this and I have to admit that Gary Furlong deserves a standing ovation for the myriad of dialects and voices he mastered as well as for an amazing performance!! 👏👏👏

Gary Furlong delivers a supreme performance in this turn of the century American historical!! 👏👏👏

This is a wonderful story of finding love, friendship, and acceptance in a traveling carnival in the early 1900's. Jonah is a small town preacher's son, and he has been kicked out of his home and beaten for the "perversion" of being attracted to another man. Rafe is the owner and leader of the carnival where Jonah takes refuge, and he has his own secret past and reasons for trying to escape. The two men are instantly attracted, and they quickly begin changing each other's lives for the better.
I found this story thoroughly entrancing. Jonah, Rafe, and the other carnival workers, are all brialliantly brought to life, through both the authors' words and the fantastic narration. There were moments that brought me to tears, and there were times I smiled happily. I enjoyed this world and the people who inhabited it. Jonah and Rafe stole a piece of my heart.
