About this listen

In an intense, emotional mystery that spans a decade in the life of a small town, best-selling author Brian Freeman brings us an unforgettable heroine who discovers that the dead may sometimes be easier to rescue than the living.

Deputy Shelby Lake was abandoned as a baby, saved by a stranger who found her in the freezing cold. Now, years later, a young boy is missing - and Shelby is the one who must rescue a child.

The only evidence of what happened to 10-year-old Jeremiah Sloan is a bicycle left behind on a lonely road. After a desperate search fails to locate him, the close bonds of Shelby’s hometown begin to fray under the weight of accusations and suspicion. Everyone around her is keeping secrets. Her adoptive father, her best friend, her best friend’s young daughter - they all have something to hide. Even Shelby is concealing a mistake that could jeopardize her career and her future.

Unearthing the lies of the people in Jeremiah’s life doesn’t get the police and the FBI any closer to finding him. As time passes and the case grows cold, Shelby worries that the mystery will stay buried forever under the deep, deep snow. But even the deepest snow melts in the spring.

When a tantalizing clue finally comes to light, Shelby must confront the darkest lie of all. Exposing the truth about Jeremiah will leave no one’s life untouched - including her own.

A stunner

This was extremely well written by Brian Freeman and equally well performed by January LaVoy. It’s most enjoyed as a non-stop listen. The characters were well exposed and motivated, and the outcome is a stunner. If you’ve ever lived in a small town this one will speak to you. If you haven’t, you don’t know what you have missed. Pack up and move out. You’ll be a better person for it.

Surprise enjoy

This book was a surprise to me. It was offered as a daily special sale item a few days ago. I did not expect much as I generally think that daily sale books are not ideal candidates for reading. In this case I was very very wrong. I’ve been a audiobooks listener for years and I’ve enjoyed two or more books a month as I long as I can remember. This book was a superstar. It is highly recommended. I look forward to hearing it again in a year or so.

♥♥ 4.5 STARS ♥♥

Better than I expected. I bought this book on the daily deal. I didn't think it would be worth a credit for it but I was WRONG. Very good book. I am going to look up any other books by Brian Freeman as soon as I finish the review. His writing was very good and easy to follow with twists and turns that make it interesting without being so complicated it was hard to follow. I enjoyed this book start to finish and recommend it for anyone who likes intrigue. The ending, well, I did not figure it out ahead of time, which is something I love in a book!

a small town with big secrets

I really enjoyed this one! First, the narration is very, very good. January Lavoy has wonderful voice. She really pulls you in. Second, this is a well-crafted story! Think: small, charming town filled with interesting characters. Now, add in a whole bunch of secrets, people being naughty and a missing child. Who took the kiddo and WHY???? Enjoy! I was sorry it had to end. good one.
