About this listen
Three shotgun blasts rip through the side of Officer Jim Chee's trailer as the Navajo Tribal Policeman sleeps. He survives, but the inexplicable attack has raised disturbing questions about a lawman once beyond reproach. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn wonders why Chee was a target and what connection the assault has to a series of gruesome murders that has been plaguing the reservation. But the investigation is leading them both into a nightmare of ritual, witchcraft, and blood . . . and into the dark and mystical domain of evil beings of Navajo legend, the "skinwalkers."

In this book, first published in 1972, he recounts a Zuni myth first recorded a century ago by the anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing. Hillerman's version of the story, written to be listened to by children ten years old and up, will have equal appeal for adults with an interest in Native American culture.

Excellent Series Entry
Tony Hillerman does a brilliant job of evoking the feel of the Colorado Plateau and a very believable job of building Dineh characters. (From things I've read, the members of the tribe feel much the same, though I can't make much comment personally.)
Every book in the series that I've read I've found to be very much worth the time. Highly recommended.
And of course George Guidall does his usual brilliant job as a narrator. Nearly any book is better for his narration.

Landscape, Reader & Hillerman
Skinwalker gets another 5 star trio from me because there are so many layers to the story.
Hillerman’s use of landscape description to convey Chee and Leaphorn’s connection to land and culture informs the reader of their way of thinking as it moves the story plot along. Guiddall’s reading brings the book to life. I appreciate Hillerman’s ability to wrap up the thriller in fewer pages, allowing the reader to pick up the next book in short order.

Great orator and love the stories.
I love following this series. The books are short but enjoyable. I'm from the southwest and the very close to the Navajo Nation so this is just very intriguing for me even though it's set 30 - 40 years in the past. and I do have a Native American ancestry. I am Cherokee though so this is not necessarily my history, but I do enjoy it

One of Hillerman s Best…
He brings to life the Enchanted Region that is Western New Mexico and Eastern Arizona…Indian Country….Not to mention a terrific mystery. Here is an author at the height of his powers. Great Listen. Almost 5 Stars across the board, but can’t quite give George Guidall the max….not because he fails in his usual excellent job, but because the exquisite picture Hillerman paints is so extraordinary it requires a Navajo accent to make the book perfect.
