About this listen

The best-selling legal thriller - and CBS TV series - has charismatic defense attorney Mickey Haller taking on a slam-dunk court case involving a Beverly Hills playboy - but as it spirals into a nightmare, he finds himself in a fight for his life.

Mickey Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense attorney who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, traveling between the far-flung courthouses of Los Angeles to defend clients of every kind. Bikers, con artists, drunk drivers, drug dealers - they're all on Mickey Haller's client list. For him, the law is rarely about guilt or innocence, it's about negotiation and manipulation. Sometimes it's even about justice.

A Beverly Hills playboy arrested for attacking a woman he picked up in a bar chooses Haller to defend him, and Mickey has his first high-paying client in years. It is a defense attorney's dream, what they call a franchise case. And as the evidence stacks up, Haller comes to believe this may be the easiest case of his career. Then someone close to him is murdered and Haller discovers that his search for innocence has brought him face-to-face with evil as pure as a flame.

To escape without being burned, he must deploy every tactic, feint, and instinct in his arsenal - this time to save his own life.

Great Narration

The book is a fast paced fiction. I would like to comment on the narration in this review. The narration is just fantastic. The narrator puts on different accents which some times almost sounds like it's multiple people narrating. Listening to this audio book was almost like watching a movie without removing the imagination part that a movie takes away from a book.

Great Conelly

I have read every book Conelly has written, and I rate this as one of his top two or three. There's a great new character in this novel, lawyer Micky Haller, who, in my opinion, is a bit more likeable than Conelly's most famous creation, Harry Bosch. Harry is just too intense and sometimes a bit self-righteous, whereas this guy just seems to take himself and his job a little less seriously than Harry does. I hope we get some more Micky Haller books from MC. I didn't give 5 stars, because I didn't like the narrator in this book quite as much as Len Cariou, and, well, I just hardly ever give five stars.

Great Story!!!!

Well if your looking for a book to fold into and loose sight of everything else?? This is it! Its a slow start with a roller coaster ride to the end. The narrator is outstanding....you'll love it!

Lose the Music

My low score is for the audio production. Music swells and fades between chapter breaks and it can be distracting and annoying. Sometimes, depending on where you are lisening to the book, the ambient noise in addition to the music can drown out the narration, making you have to scroll back to hear the story once the noise has stopped, suspending your involvement in the story. The producers should be aware that the listener isn't always in a locale where one can hang on every word.

Otherwise the story is vintage Connelly, full of twists and turns that keep you riveted.

Connelly delivers!

Wow. That's the word that sums this audiobook up. Just wow. Fantastic narration. Why doesn't Grupper do more of these? Not just the narration however. This novel is Connelly's best since The Poet (which was previously his best). Absolutely recommended. I don't give five stars lightly. Mickey Haller is a flawed hero. What a wild ride. I didn't miss Harry Bosch for one single moment. In fact, this was a refreshing departure from the Bosch series.

As much as I like Harry Bosch, it's just uncanny how Connelly's sidetrips FROM the Bosch series end up being my very favorites. So far those departures include Blood Work, The Poet, and now this one. I haven't yet read the other departure from the Bosch series (Void Moon) but certainly plan on it.

Hopefully Connelly plans to return to this character. A case with Harry and Mickey crossing paths in the legal system seems to be the logical course of action.

Don't miss this download.

My first Connelly

This author came recommended to me by three different friends and one suggested this specific book. So, I decided to give him a shot and I really enjoyed the book. A snappy LA defense attorney where during the book a few twists and turns turned it into a really good listen. I'll for sure give Connelly another try.

Great mystery, superb narration, ditch the music

Any additional comments?

The random background music was very annoying and distracting and added nothing to the story. I so badly wanted to turn that off. At first I kept wondering where that annoying music was coming from till I realized it was part of the audiobook. The narrator was perfect. Sounded like multiple narrators.

Hard to get into, but well worth it

I'm basing this 5 star review off of the book in its entirety. To be honest, I had a hard time getting interested up until the big client came into the picture. But once that was in play, I was glued to the plot. Hands down one of the best books when it comes to unpredictability. And being told from a defense attorney's prospective was equally as interesting.

Naturally, if we could customize the rating, I would say more like 4.5, but I do think it's more of a 5 star vs. 4 star book.
Character development could have been a little better. I wanted to know more about each of the characters. But you have to appreciate how fully developed the plot was. And with that I look over the average character development with ease.

Great Legal Triller

Make sure you have some time free when you start listening. If you stop you won't think of much else. I look forward to more legal thrillers from Connelly. His detective novels are great too.
