Publisher's summary

Where does an angel go when he’s been to Hell and back?

Renegade angel Bobby Dollar does not have an easy afterlife. After surviving the myriad gruesome dangers Hell oh-so-kindly offered him, Bobby has returned empty-handed – his demon girlfriend Casmira, the Countess of Cold Hands, is still in the clutches of Eligor, Grand Duke of Hell. Some hell of a rescue.

Forced to admit his failure, Bobby ends up back at his job as an angel advocate. That is, until Walter, an old angel friend whom Bobby never thought he’d see again, shows up at the local bar. The last time he saw Walter was in Hell, when Walter had tried to warn him about one of Bobby’s angel superiors. But now Walter can’t remember anything, and Bobby doesn’t know whom to trust.

Turns out that there’s corruption hidden within the higher ranks of Heaven and Hell, but the only proof Bobby has is a single feather. Before he knows it, he’s in the High Hall of Heavenly Judgement – no longer a bastion for the moral high ground, if it ever was, but instead just another rigged system – on trial for his immortal soul…

Sleeping Late on Judgement Day is the third installment of Tad Williams’ urban fantasy Bobby Dollar series!

Angelic Private Dick with Big Balls

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely! Book 1 and Book 3 of the "Bobby Dollar" series are some of the best the hundreds of noir fiction stories I've ever read. You can skip Book 2 and you won't miss anything.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sleeping Late On Judgement Day?

This is a "guy" book. Cars, guns, gorgeous goddesses, hot sex, lots of vengeful violence balanced with sarcastic comic relief. Imagine that you're an immortal being, with amnesia, stuck in a meat body on Earth with the ability to open a "zipper" into Heaven whenever your have issues with your bosses while being an Angel Advocate" for disembodied dead people floating between heaven and hell. Bobby's day job is arguing against attorneys from Hell to defend the recently departed from being sent to Eternal Fired forever Bobby Dollar is the perfect noir detective type. This kind of work takes a special kind of "angel": a snide, cynical, quasi-alcoholic wise-ass loner with an insouciant sense of no bullshit existential spiritually. Bobby is an empathetic small town Angel with street smarts, a gun-totting bad-ass big city attitude with zero tolerance for demonic villains -- except for his exquisitely beautiful girlfriend from Hell, Caz. There is nothing corny or ecclesiastical about this story. It's strictly hard core skepticism. As a work of literature it is eloquent, yet real. Every sequence in the story flows seamlessly into the next with a climactic ending more satisfying than the hottest sex this side of Hell! It's a must read from every Earthbound Angel.

Which character – as performed by George Newbern – was your favorite?

Bobby Dollar. George is a genius at personifying all the many characters in the book!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really. I wanted to savor every minute. When I finished I wanted to listen to it again!

Any additional comments?

I've read about 4,000 books. This is in my top 100, for sure.

Not your average noir story!

How do I write a review for a book that has two previous books in the series. This one is the CLIMATIC conclusion that answers all your questions...if snarkly.

William's writing is so superior to modern authors I would be surprised if someone builds a statue to him in some local park.

The narrator was amazing

I loved these books and will eagerly read more if Mr. Williams would grace us with the stories. For those worrying about the religious aspect, don't worry, there isn't one. No single religion is implied or examined. It is all very well done and a wonderfully complex adventure story with a backdrop like you have never seen before. Very refreshing read

Where does Sleeping Late On Judgement Day rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have listened to hundreds of audio books. This one is in the top ten percent.

What about George Newbern’s performance did you like?

He reads the book at a fast pace which is exactly what is needed to keep the listener in all the way.

Any additional comments?

I personally like the style the author uses. He weaves off the point intentionally and then pops back in at exactly the right time. Great job.

Lots of action

I liked this book. I didn't like it as much as the previous two books. This one had too much detail when describing the battle scenes for my taste. All in all, I recommend it, though.

Good Story and Great Narration!

George Newbern, you are an impeccable narrator, sir! I read vol 1-2, and the voice was spot on with what I had imagined as Bobby in my head with his dry and sarcastic tone. The narration truly made the story come to life for me, and hats off to Tad again for another enjoyable series! :)

Huge Improvement Over Awful Book Two

This book returns to and surpasses the quality of the first. It's just a shame that you have to read the second book to get here.

Great listen

Great series. Love Tad and his spin on the machinations of heaven and hell. Definitely puts questions in your head about what really goes in out there behind the scenes.

Why isn’t this on screen

Hi! I love all three of these books. The writing, characters, dialog, and arc - are superb. They are honestly some of the best and most adaptable books I’ve ever come across. I don’t understand why they aren’t on the silver or small screen, but if anyone from such an agency is reading this - I would be happy to help make that a reality. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an authentic and true to the books adaptation, meanwhile, my thanks to the author for the great pleasure of these works.
