Publisher's summary

Beckett Gaines, a gay teen living in South Carolina, has his world turned upside-down by a jock in this laugh-out-loud novel that’s Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets The Parent Trap.

Beck: The Golden Girls-loving, out-and-proud choir nerd growing up in the “ass-crack of the Bible belt.”

Jax: The Golden Boy, star quarterback with a slick veneer facing uncomfortable truths about himself and his past.

When Beck’s emotionally fragile dad starts dating the recently single (and supposedly lesbian) mom of former bully, Jaxon Parker, Beck is not having it. Jax isn’t happy about the situation either, holding out hope that his moms will reunite and restore the only stable home he’s ever known. Putting aside past differences, the boys plot to derail the budding romance between their parents at their conservative hometown’s first-ever Rainbow Prom. Hearts will be broken, new romance will bloom, but nothing will go down the way Beck and Jax have planned.

In his hilarious and provocative debut, Greg Howard examines the challenges of growing up different in a small southern town through the lens of colorful and unforgettable characters who stay with you long after the last drop of sweet tea.

Lovely story, well written

Although a beautiful story that is well written, with obvious love for the characters, I found the story line to be a little bit unbelievable at times. It was, however, also moving, funny, charming and often disarming--full of current pop culture references and humor. I took it as how the world should be, but is not, yet The narrators, however, bring these characters to life. Crouch, in particular, has an uncanny ability to inhabit the characters' skins. He speaks as they would speak, intonates as they would, and effortlessly so. He can be hypnotic at times, and make you forget that you are listening to an audio book--but rather feel like you are eavesdropping on someone's innermost thoughts or their private conversations. I just wanted more and more of him. He is a master craftsman and I will make a point of seeking out other works that he has narrated. He's amazing.

Keeps you interested, fun, light and witty.

Loved both narrators, especially the switch between Jacks and Beck. Beck's character is a charm.

So good! Listen!

I love a good gay teen coming of age book and this is one of the best I’ve listened to it. It’s incredibly funny! And touching. And being from the south I connected with on a different level but I loved it!

I really wanted to like this book

but it didn't work for me. The performance was great, the story - implausible, and the characters behaved like they were much older than claimed.

Better than binging on Netflix

A little thing that I like to do is read while I listen to the Audiobook, and this book just transported me, it felt like I was watching an amazing show, at times I felt I was gonna hear noise like music or cheering, that's how much I was drawn in. I wasn't as fond of the characters in the beginning but as they began to unveil I wound up falling in love with them by the end.

Pretty damn good...

Oh, these two can write their respective faces off, it's obvious from page 1. Great comedic tenor...Worth a listen/read for sure. Sharp, disarmingly authentic, and flatout funny.

Enjoyable / wish they got a younger narrator

Story was a nice enjoyable story. Performance - both narrators where good but the one reading Jax part the voice was way to old and was hard to rap your head around as a high school kid. Beck's narrator was spot on. After a while you can sort of get past the creepy feeling that the voice sounds like a 40 something year old. Other than that the story was great.

Loved it!!!

I loved it from beginning to end. I was engaged the entire time and did not want to stop listening. This book showed how important it is to honest with yourself and others, or you will lead people on a darkened path. Remember to have hope but also be realistic. Not everyone gets a happy ending in real life. Aside for that, the narrators were fantastic!!! I highly recommend this book!!!
