About this listen

A novella companion to New York Times best-selling author Maya Banks' Shades of Gray.

Softly at Sunrise takes place in a gap of time that occurs in Shades of Gray. Reading this novella will in no way spoil Shades of Gray, though there are some brief mentions of events that occur in that book.

Rachel Kelly has traveled a long, hard road in her journey back to her husband, Ethan, and the Kelly family. Now, as she and Ethan are poised to move into their new home, safe behind the walls of the Kelly compound, Rachel wonders if she’ll finally be free of the ghosts that have haunted her for so long and if she’ll step into the sun after a past steeped in darkness.

"With love to every single reader who read and loved 'The Darkest Hour' and wanted to know more about Ethan and Rachel and how they were doing down the road. This is for you."

Least favorite... hated the narrator...

This is a 3 hour book, doesn't really give you more insight about Ethan and Rachel. If you skip it, you won't miss out.

I don't really understand the purpose of this book as it covers an incident that requires Rachel to be saved. I thought it was going to be more about the two characters.

The narration is awful. Sorry Adam. I hated the southern accents (that never existed before) and the high pitch voices. Errrr!! In the next book, Adam gets better. But, in the book after, the voices get worse.

Overall, if you want to know more about Ethan and Rachel, this book isn't it. Actually, just skip this book and go to the next. You won't miss anything.

Really enjoyed the story

What did you love best about Softly at Sunrise?

I really enjoyed the storyline and update on Ethan & Rachel. The school incident was well written. I Missed the prior narrator, I liked Adam Paul and remembered him from the Breathless Trilogy, but really missed Harry Berkeley as he brought the characters to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Which character – as performed by Adam Paul – was your favorite?

Like his normal voice, the change is Character, wasn't as good as the prior narrator, Harry Berkeley

Great story, terrible change in narrator.

I love this series, BUT this new Narrator was terrible for this story. He completely changed the image of the characters by making them sound too country and childish.....it felt like he didn't know the characters and their "voices" didn't match their personalities at all.

WHY CHANGE THE NARRATOR

If you could sum up Softly at Sunrise in three words, what would they be?

dissapointed in narrator

What was one of the most memorable moments of Softly at Sunrise?

there was not one - the narrator ruined it

What didn’t you like about Adam Paul’s performance?

He made the men sound like they were mousy and the women like they were from the back country - this is one of the best series I have ever found - why would you change the narrator like this disappointing

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

n/a

Love this series!!!

I loved this story but disappointed in the narrator’s attempt at character voices. His voice for the Mother made me laugh so hard it was a distraction from the story.

Read the book

Softly at sunrise was an excellent addition to kgi. Not a fan of the narration. it was difficult to listen to when he spoke as Marlene. I love when narrators switch voices. unfortunately this should have been read as a story. Maya Banks gets 5 stars for the story!!! read the book to enjoy kgi

Softly at Sunrise

This is a short update on the Rachel and Ethan story line, Here we are entertained with her struggles with the past and trying to go back to work. Her fears of memories of Ethan before she left and was held for a year. We get to see a glimpse in the next book about PJ and Cole. There is suspense while Rachel is substituting at a local school. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the narrator. He just didn't have the husky voice of the men in the story like I envisioned when reading this the first time. Otherwise it was spot on with M. Blake's writings in this series.

Bring Harry back.

Adam Paul is not the right person for this reading, or any KGI reading. It has ruined the KGI series for me. The guy all sound girly half of the time. Adam does not give the characters the same emotion that Harry did.

New Narrator

very good book, just like the rest of the series. the only issue I had was the person that was chosen to narrate it. the previous narrator was much better, had a wider range of tones to his voice, and the southern accent was not so obviously fake.
