About this listen

Cain is a scarred but proud man haunted by a terrible skill: the ability to track people who don't want to be found.

Rosetta is a runaway slave fueled by the passion and determination only a mother can feel. And she will risk everything for the promise of freedom.

In the perilous years before the Civil War, their fates will intertwine in an unforgettable journey, one of hardship and redemption that will take them from Virginia to Boston and back - an odyssey that will change them forever.

Michael C. White has written beautiful novels before, including the acclaimed A Dream of Wolves, yet none has prepared us for the sheer scope and drama of this new tale, a dazzling tapestry of imagination and character, atmosphere, and emotion. Poignant and utterly compelling, it is a story to be savored and remembered.

Marvelous Writing

Marvelous writing. Weak ending. In the middle, can't put it down - or turn it off.

More personal than historical

This is an excellent look at the life and conflicts of pre-Civil War America. Cain experiences both sides of the slavery issue, addresses his past and learns the depths of love. The book puts the era into an up close experience that the history books do not reveal.

Bravo!

I usually do not enjoy shoot em up, blood and guts stories but this one held me mesmerized to the very end. The narration was excellent and the characters believable. I listened while on a long tour bus trip and could not wait to get to my hotel room to finish the story! Although the story ending is a bit predictable, there are enough twists and turns with rising and falling action to satisfy the listener from start to finish. I would like to see more of White's books available to Audible listeners.

Excellent story of love, character, and slavery

This is ultimately a love story, also a story of revelation of character development as well as character degradation--those you hope to obtain love and those you love to hate. This was a very meaningful revelation of the slavery period of our nation, the issues and dealing with these issues very sensitively and effectively--who ever heard of a slave (soul)-catcher? Very enjoyable and coherent story--well constructed and developed. Excellent fiction and story telling.-- miss the characters already:the good (Cain), the bad (Eberly), the ugly (Preacher) and the beautiful Rosetta.

Soul Catcher

The sum of this book was not worth listening to the ethnic and sexist slurs to get to the end. I gained no large historical context and found no surprise in the ending.
