In the Texas backlands in 1885, 12-year-old Joey Shipman's father dies under mysterious circumstances, and the boy is forced to live with his stepmother and Blair Meacham, a hanger-on at the farm.

I have NEVER been disappointed with an Elmer Kelton book, and I have NEVER been disappointed with a narration by George Guidall. From cats to cowboys, if Guidall narrates a book, it has always been worth my time. I believe it will be the same for you.

If you like western novels with a strong moral message and world-class dialogue, you can always count on Elmer Kelton to deliver.

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire story. As usual, Elmer Kelton renders an authentic Western adventure that delivers excitement flavored with humor and clever dialog.

As usual, George Guidall brings the tale to life with his narration.

The book was a very simple book but you could not figure out exactly how the book was going to end as you can and so many other books. This was a book of love intrigue family tragedy death and growth of the human body and soul.

The twist and turns that the boy and his cousin took and how it ended up at the end of the book.

As good as I’d hoped it would be. Some West Texas history in this one as most of Kelton’s books do. And as always, Kelton is the consummate gentlemen writer.

I admit I gave a bda review, snd shouldn't have. I couldn't understand Goerge'd narrative, Gave me an attitude against the story. I managed to change the graphic equalizer enough to understand
