About this listen

In this illuminating story of her life and conversations, the host of public radio's Speaking of Faith describes her journey of spiritual exploration - a journey shared by countless others.

A former diplomat and a graduate of the Yale Divinity School, Krista Tippett grew up in an evangelical culture and then spent a decade as a nonreligious person. Now, as someone who for many years has reflected on and talked with others about faith, she brings deep insight and a unique vantage point as she explores religious traditions - viewing them as rich resources for our spirits, as guides to our most important modern confusions, and as correctives for the excesses of religion itself. She illustrates a way to talk about faith that defuses the usual minefields, drawing from her own experience and her conversations across the world's traditions with theologians, scientists, ethicists, and activists.

Critic reviews

"More than a personal chronicle...this is a rigorously brainy piece of work, as informed by the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Reinhold Niebuhr, Charles Darwin, and Annie Dillard as it is by Tippett's fascinating interviews with figures like Elie Wiesel and Karen Armstrong. As Tippett takes on issues from the science-and-religion debates to the future of progressive Islam, she shows herself to possess the same 'imaginative intellectual approach' that she admires in some of her interview subjects." Clarity of Faith

Yes I know that my review title could be considered an oxymoron but in the agile articulation of Krista Tippets faith becomes a vibrant challenge to anyone concerned with things spiritual. From the incredible breadth of her knowledge and experience to her pleasing diction I look forward every Thursday to her next show. Her incisive questions never pierce the ear nor heart the callous roughness of the evening news. In a world of 30 second shrill and bombastic journalism she makes you feel that no matter how you approach faith your view of the world is respected as she eagerly chases her guests' thoughts and ideas without guile but with clear sincerity and curiosity. Listening to her read her book is , as all great art, never facile nor superficial but genuine and real and kind. Failing to hear her book is to fail to discover that there are still spiritual beings among us that are questing to become engaged fully and richly in this human experience.

A deep experience & expression of ardent LOVE.

What can I say but after listening to this most scholarly, vulnerable, and authentic work of one's heart and poetic expression of such vast experience, I am no less in love with the heart of this amazing woman. In my own way, I have attempted such an expression as I continue to allow the experiences of the connection with others to reshape me each and every day as such gifts are given. Thank you Krista for your many sacrifices that have born the richest fruit of this amazing work of art which I have been blessed to discover in this beautiful exposition, SPEAKING OF FAITH. May your spoken words and written words serve the uniting and peaceful purpose intended for many generations to come. I am also most grateful to our shared mentor, one of many, Rachel Naomi Reman. May she rest in peace and may we all be open to the source of such peace in the remaining moments that we are given while on this planet together.

great conversation in faith

Krista Tippet is The voice for American conversation about faith. The book is both an autobiography of her faith journey but also how her show 'Speaking of Faith' has morphed over the years. She should be the model of how we engage in faith issues but also the dialogue of how we embody our faith throughout our lives and the lives of others.
